Driving safety advocater to speak at county high schools
CHENANGO COUNTY – On March 17, 2006, Karen Torres received a phone call that would forever change her life. Her father, Patrick Mapleson, had been struck and killed by a distracted driver while woking along the highway. Since then, Torres has devoted her life to educating people about the very real dangers associated with distracted driving.
She will be taking her message to various Chenango County high schools this week including Afton and Greene on Monday, Dec. 5, and Norwich and Unadilla Valley on Tuesday, Dec. 6.
Torres is a speaker for The National Safety Council, New York Governor's Traffic Safety Committee, and the Texting Awareness Foundation. In addition to playing a part in many different roadway safety campaigns, Torres has volunteered for the New York State Department of Transportation by participating in their Public Service Announcement for a statewide roadway safety campaign.
In 2013, Torres was asked by Governor Cuomo to speak alongside him at his “No Texting While Driving” conference. She delivered the Keynote address at the 2013 Dangerous Driving Conference at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood, NY, and in 2016 at the New York State Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association in Verona, NY.
In April 2014, Torres was the recipient of News 12's “12 Making a Difference” award. She was featured on a WABC news special “Operation 7–Save a Life,” ABC's news program “Viewpoint Long Island,” and on Fios News One's “Heroes on Our Island.”
Torres' message has reached beyond New York as she has spoken in New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, Texas, Chicago, and New Mexico.
Chairman of Chenango County Traffic and Safety Randy Gibbon says that the aim of Torres’ talks is to reduce vehicle accidents throughout Chenango County.
