Happy Holidays from the Chenango County Museum
NORWICH – The Chenango County Historical Society (CCHS) and Museum located at 45 Rexford Street in Norwich, NY, wishes all of our volunteers, visitors, members and supporters a very happy holiday. The CCHS invite the community members to please visit the Museum during this joyful season, open Tuesdays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed on holidays).
The Museum holiday trees, decorated by various local organizations and community members, as well as beautiful seasonal decorations featured throughout the building, will be on display through the middle of January. The CCHS thanks all of those who participated in this year’s tree decorating, including: Chenango County Hospice; the James Madison Chapter of the NSDAR; Margaret Weeks; Joanne French; Charlene LaFever; “Loco Jim” LoPiccolo; Norwich Garden Club; GMU Pre-K; Town and Country Garden Club; The Grange; Holy Family School Art Classes; Margie Casey and Shirley Palmer; John Antonowicz; and Kali Murphy. The Exhibits currently being featured in the Museum include an NBT Bank feature, a model railroad display and vintage Christmas ornaments and décor.
The Bull Thistle Gift Shop, located inside the Museum, has seasonal gifts and various local history publications available, including the newest book, the “Butter and Cheese Express”, third edition. This publication, originally published in 1974 and updated in 1990, is greatly revised and enlarged, expanding on the two prior editions and increasing readers’ knowledge of the Auburn branch of the Oswego Midland, the branch that included the Rainbow Trestle at Otselic Center. Authored by Richard F. Palmer and Douglas J. Ellison, this latest edition contains more than 50 images, the addition of town maps, appendixes, a chronology of important events, a bibliography and an index. The “Butter and Cheese Express”, third edition, is available at the museum for just $22 per book, and members receive a 10 percent discount. The Paperback Exchange book store, located right next to the museum at 77 Silver Street is open weekly, Wednesdays through Fridays, 10am to 4pm, and Saturdays, 10am to 1pm, so stop by and pick up a few books to curl up with next to the fire!
The CCHS Museum also invites you to become a new member of our museum family or to renew your membership for 2017. Members enjoy the following: free admission into the Museum; a quarterly newsletter containing Museum activities and events and local history articles; 10 percent off all gift shop purchases, including publications; a late spring ice cream social; a free pancake breakfast prior to the March Maple Sunday; and free entry into the annual Antiques Show held Labor Day Sundays at the Chenango County Fairgrounds. The CCHS staff, volunteers and Board Members look forward to all interested parties joining.
The Chenango County Historical Society also hopes you can join us once again for the “Fourth Sunday Flea Markets” at the Norwich VFW in January, February and March of 2017, each from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Vendor spaces are still available for all three months, and the cost it just $20 per booth per each show; a table is provided in each booth space.
