Blackhawks fall to Laurens off last second missed shot, after failing to defend the 3-ball

OXFORD – The Oxford boys varsity basketball team has slid to yet another loss on the season, despite putting themselves in a position for the late tie and potential win to start out 2017, the last second shot fell flat as the buzzer erupted and Laurens walked away the winners at 45-42.
“We played well, it was a back and forth game,” said Oxford head coach Tim Davis. “We had a shot at the end that would have tied it, but the shot didn't go in.”
The game, on Jan. 3, played in the Blackhawk gymnasium was a nail-biter to start out the new year. After posted up just four points to begin the game, a rusty Oxford squad fell into form making a late push for the win. Oxford trailed by only one point, despite the rough start, at 19-18.
Laurens secured their spot on top, keeping the lead heading into the final period, as they bested Oxford in the third, tacking on 13 points to Oxford's 11.
Oxford's Austin Crawford enjoyed a breakout game, doing nearly all of his 17 point team-leading damage in the second half. As he racked up three three-pointers in the third and fourth. Crawford along with Jason Davis who scored 12 points in the game, would not be able to make the final push back to force overtime as Oxford was able to match Laurens in the fourth at 13 points a piece but would fail on the last second shot as Coach Davis attested.
Impressively on the night, despite it being a team sport, Laurens would see only three athletes score in the game. Laurens was even more impressively, led by Mason Weir who hit six three-point shots on his way to netting a massive 31 point game – as Oxford's defense simply had no answer for Weir.
Next up for Oxford (3-5 overall) they will be hosting Hancock on Thursday, Jan. 5, at 7:15 p.m.
