Vikings pull off team win after last match pin earns them the go-ahead points

COOPERSTOWN – The Otselic Valley varsity wrestling team squeezed out a four point win over Cooperstown-Milford on Tuesday night when, a last match pin sealed the swing of points in OVs favor for the 41-37 win.
The big move Vikings, would in fact earn seven of the potential 15 wins on the night – with all seven coming by way of pin, technical fall or forfeit.
Starting the match out right with a win for the Vikings of OV was Micah Lyon at 126 pounds. Lyon defeated Tyler Velasco with a pin in the second period at 3:13. This early 6-0 lead for Ov turned about-face when the Vikings dropped their next three matches by a pin, a decision and a major decision respectively – drawing the team score to 13-6 in favor of Cooperstown-Milford.
Otselic Valley would earn just one middle-weight win when James Ossont at 152 pounds defeated Blake Guzy by pin at 2:58 – taking the match to a close 13-12.
After once again dropping the next three matches in a row – all by way of pins – it seemed as if Cooperstown-Milford was going to run away with the team win on the night.
However, the team with the more completed roster proved to show their ability, as OV sent three wrestlers out for forfeit victories essentially wiping clean the slate of dropping three losses by pins. With no match occurring at 113 pounds and a Nathan Purtell technical fall victory over Lucas LoRusso at 99 pounds Otselic Valley had found themselves back in the road matchup as the score sat at 35-31 in favor of the OV Vikings.
Following an OV forfeit at 106 pounds – and the aforementioned double forfeit at 113 pounds – the match now at 37-35 in favor of Cooperstown-Milford with one lone match left on the schedule. It was Dakota Hackett of OV who proved to be the savior at 120 pounds, as Hackett snagged the final victory of the night, taking home a individual win by fall at 3:26 but more importantly swinging the team score back toward Otselic Valley who took the win at 41-37.
Next up for Otselic Valley (4-6 overall) will next see action when they head to the Port Byron Mid-Winter Tournament
at Port Byron this weekend, Jan. 7.
