Sauquoit Indians down the lady Marauders to open new calendar year
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville's girls varsity basketball fell flat when they faced off against Sauquoit Valley for a Tuesday night matchup, losing by 11-points at 54-43.
The S-E ladies would come out of the gates to post up a solid 12 point first period – trailing 13-12 at the time – only two fall flat in the next two. This deficit, caused by sloppy passes from the Marauders dug themselves into a 25-19 halftime deficit – followed by an even worse 41-29 deficit heading into the final period.
That is when the rust shook free of the S-E athletes and they posted a final period of scoring 20 points. This 20 point comeback attempt was a team effort as four different girls were involved in the scoring frenzy. Despite the valiant push from the lady Marauders, the Indians proved too consistent in their play throughout the game – posting double digit scoring throughout and tacking on 13 fourth period points to hold onto the comfortable lead. Notably, of the five Sauquoit Valley athletes to score in the game, four posted double digit numbers.
Leading S-E in the game for scoring was Miranda Wright who snagged the scoring high with her seven fourth period points to bring her total to 17 points in the game. Trailing Wright was S-E's Tessa Cole with 12 points, and Kaitlyn Furner with eight points – six of which came in the fourth with two three-pointers.
Up next for Sherburne-Earlville (7-4 overall) they will be home for their next game on Friday, Jan. 6, at 7 p.m. when they host Canastota.
