Norwich handles the Blue Devils with ease; completes the sweep

NORWICH – Both the girls and boys varsity squads for the Norwich Purple Tornado played – and subsequently won – when they were pitted against the Blue Devils of Chenango Forks this past Friday.
The girls defeated the Blue Devils in Norwich as they defended their home court with the tune of a 66-54 win; while the boys traveled south to take on Chenango Forks, where they managed a 61-51 victory.
• The Norwich girls were faced with a high powered offense who managed to keep pace with theirs this past Friday, Jan. 6, as a 19-17 point Norwich first period was looking to shape into a high scoring affair.
However, despite the Norwich point totals trickling off as the game progressed, so did Chenango Forks – at a much higher rate.
After leading by just two points after one period, at 19-17, Norwich posted a solid second period of 17 points, while Chenango Forks was somewhat stifled to just 13 points. With a bounce-back period of 15 points in the third, it was Norwich who kept pace with 15 of their own – only to once again see improved defense hold Chenango Forks held to nine points to close out the game.
Leading Norwich in scoring on the night was senior Meghan Komendarek. The Tornado senior attacked the net for 22 points, while her teammate Triniti Myers trailed with 16 points to help secure the win.
Norwich girls basketball, (8-1 overall) will travel to Seton Catholic Central on Wednesday, Jan. 11, at 7:45 p.m. for their next game.

The Tornado boys looked to be locked into a close one with Chenango Forks as well, following an 11-11 first period. That is when consistency kicked in Norwich was successful in scoring double digit points in each of periods – with a dominating 20 points and 19 points in the third and fourth period respectively.
The difference in the locked game after one, was the ability for Norwich to hold the Blue Devils to a deafening six points in the second period.
Enjoying a solid scoring day during the win, was Norwich's Dashawn King who racked up 21 points for the Tornado, while going 4-7 from the line. Norwich enjoyed some team work in scoring following their team leader King – as three athletes managed to grab eight points, Marcus Benjamin, Chris Jeffrey, and Tre Bonham – while Michael Carson enjoyed one of his better games snagging 11 points, going 3-4 from the line.
Norwich did have to contend with the likes of Parker Urso of Chenango Forks who used his eight shots to tally 18 points in the Blue Devils loss.
With a win, Norwich boys basketball, (8-3 overall) will next see action when they take on Seton Catholic Central at home at 7:45 p.m., on Tuesday, Jan. 10.
