Long-time S-E coach told ‘no longer needed’
SHERBURNE - At the Sherburne-Earlville board meeting held Monday, the future of long-time coach Jim Matott was officially called into question.
Spectators ranged from faculty members, concerned citizens and students all eager to play an active role in the board’s decision making process when it comes to policy and procedure for coaches in the upcoming spring season, in particular, with regard to the reappointment of a successful 15 year-and-plus seasonal S-E boys’ football and baseball coach Jim Matott.
While waiting for members of the school board to deliberate, Jim Matott and his wife Maria commented that, “Since the news, many former players, coaches, teachers and members of the community have shown a tremendous amount of support via Facebook, emails and texts. We're just in utter shock and disbelief on how the the athletic policies and procedures are not transparent to years of successful seasons, hard work and dedication.”
Although most of the school board meeting was closed for executive session, the matter of coach Matott's position would not be silenced. The board decided to move the concern to the next concessional board meeting with the hopes of the athletic director’s decision to review the policy.
