Norwich swimming and diving earns first win over Greene
GREENE – Two programs that are up and coming in Chenango County, two programs which have holes to fill but have much talent already on the roster, two teams who were previously winless – two teams which locked horns this past Friday, with Norwich prevailing for their first win of the season over Greene at 73-53.
Norwich took the Trojans by storm winning eight of the 12 possible events on the day, Jan. 20, effectively moving their record to 1-8 on the season.
“We had some close races during the meet. On paper we were evenly matched teams,” said Norwich head coach kevin Diefenbacher. “In our pre-meet meeting I told the boys, it was there meet to win, but they needed to swim fast during the night.”
A true turning point in the meet, happened early on during the very first event of the meet – the 200 medley relay. Norwich – Aidan Sullivan, Griffin Frank, Matt Giglio, and Jacob Shoemaker – swam an incredible time for the come from behind win over Greene. Norwich would finish with a 2:07.42 followed by Greene 2:07.98.
This near half a second is how close the match ups throughout the night proceeded to play out.
Leading Norwich in the charge was Griffin Frank and Matthew Giglio with four first place finishes on the night. Taking home three first place finishes for the Tornado was Jacob Shoemaker and Aidan Sullivan; while Ayden Hagar and Dakota Spina earned some much needed second and third place wins.
Responding to the early loss, Greene's Reid was able to edge out Hager of Norwich in the 200 freestyle by a time of 2:13.65 compared to Hager who swam a personal best of 2:28.99.
Exchanging blows early, Norwich's Frank snagged his first win of the night with a win over Sandway of Greene by a time of 2:27.80 in the 200 independent medley – Sandway finished in second with a 2:36.85.
Again with the exchange of power, Greene's Markham snagged the win in the 50 freestyle with a time of 27.28 – defeating Ayden Sullivan, Jacob Shoemaker and Dakota Spina of Norwich who took home a solid second through fourth finish with times of 28.91, 28.93, and 32.33 respectively.
Giglio then ripped off two straight wins for the Tornado in the Diving event, followed by the 100 meter fly. Giglio took home his second and third win with a winning score in diving at 182.40 to Greene's Williams who finished with a 147.30; followed by a personal best 1:07.05 in the 100 fly for Giglio who edged out teammate Spina. Spina also recorded a personal best of 1:10.48 in the second place finish.
Norwich saw two more first place wins go their way during the victory, as Shoemaker recorded a PR time of 1:05.73 in the 100 meter freestyle to steal the win from Norwich's Spina who raced to yet another PR time for himself at 1:10.48. Spina would take a big win at second over Greene's DeJager who was out reached by Spina for the second place finish.
Norwich's Griffin Frank followed suit and took home a PR time of 5:45.15 in the 500 freestyle for the win over Greene's Reid at 5:52.05.
The Tornado and Trojan swimmers then returned to exchanging blows to close out the final four events of the evening. Greene's relay team in the 200 freestyle relay team – Markham, DeJager, Sandway, and Reid – claimed the win at home over Norwich with a winning time of 2:02.61.
Sullivan of Norwich then defeated Markham in the very next event – the 100 backstroke – to take the win with a time of 1:12.15 compared to Greene's second place time of 1:19.51.
The Trojan's dominated the 100 breaststroke with a first and third place finish – as DeJager snuck into first with a dominating performance with his winning time of 1:16.79. Hager of Norwich taking second at 1:35.03 and Williams of Greene were locked into a much more competitive race, as Hager would take second over Greene's time of 1:38.87.
With the meet in the bag, the Norwich relay of Giglio, Shoemaker, Sullivan, and Frank – tacked on one more win, when they won the 400 freestyle relay with a 4:19.18 time.
Next up for the Norwich and Greene swimming and diving teams, Norwich will be home next as they host Owego on Monday, Jan. 23, at 5:30 p.m.; while Greene (0-7 overall), will be on the road next at Binghamton on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 5:30 p.m.
