Chenango County weekend basketball roundup

CHENANGO COUNTY – Teams from all over the county played this past weekend – ranging from Norwich to Otselic Valley and Valley Heights, all schools in the county saw a basketball game take place this weekend. Additional information will be provided in a later edition of The Evening Sun, on games not mentioned in the roundup.
HANCOCK – Emerging undefeated once again – the Bainbridge-Guilford lady Bobcats – sit at an undefeated 11-0 record following their latest win over Hancock this past Friday, by a score of 71-44.
The road game for B-G played on Jan. 20, saw Bobcat sophomore phenom Abigail Selfridge attack the rim for a 27-point performance.
Selfridge finished going 3-3 from the line while driving for 12 field goals in the contest – all coming from inside the arch. Assisting Selfridge in the offensive onslaught of the Bobcats was senior Becca Reyes who dropped in 11 points of her own in the win.
Bainbridge-Guilford saw double digits in the scoring column through the first three periods – taking a halftime lead at 41-27 – before tying their period high of scoring when they dropped an additional 23 points on Hancock in the third period. Hancock attempted to keep pace in the offensive showcase of B-G, however, would only manage to see four of their athletes score. Leading Hancock in scoring was Laycee Drake who was making her case in the game when she impressively scored 22-points in the loss.
According to the New York Sportswriters Association as of Jan. 15, the B-G girls are ranked sixth in Class C in the entire state – and one can only imagine this ranking may rise following this most recent dominant win.
Next up fro the B-G girls (11-0 overall), they host Deposit on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 5:30 p.m.

SHERBURNE – The Sherburne-Earlville boys varsity basketball team scratched out yet another win on the season, as they have only tasted victory in January – winning at home over Clinton by a score of 61-45.
This dominating win at home on Jan. 20, saw an evenly paced offense of the Marauders have four double-digit scorers in the contest as the team effort paid off with the 16-point victory.
Leading S-E was Matt Hull with 14-points; however, he was trailed closely with Sylas Swingle (12-points), Sam Tuttle (11-points), and Lane Hunter (10-points).
The quartet from S-E set the pace for the Marauders to gain a big lead in just the first at 21-10. This lead only grew as S-E saw a solid close to the half as they dropped an additional 13-points, while hold Clinton to another 10-point period – taking the halftime lead of 34-20.
Clinton would improve their play in the second half, however, S-E would still manage to outscore Clinton in the final two periods at 27-25.
Next up for the S-E boys (10-4 overall), they are scheduled for a Tuesday, Jan. 24, road game where they will travel to Central Valley to play at 7 p.m.

WINDSOR – The Norwich boys varsity basketball team completed the sweep of the Black Knights of Windsor with a dominating road win on Friday evening at 83-35.
The 48-point win on Jan. 20, was led seniors Chris Jeffrey and Dashawn King as the duo combined for 32-points in the dominating win. Trailing Jeffrey (17-points), and King (15-points); Norwich saw two other athletes top the double-digit mark in the blowout win – as Tre Bonham hit 11-points, while Michael Carson snagged an even 10-points.
The contest was over before the first period ended essentially as Norwich climbed to a 20-7 lead after just one period; before they tacked on another blowout period, taking the halftime lead at 46-15.
A second half, where Windsor saw improved play proved to go in Norwich's favor – as they rolled to the win, outscoring the Black Knights 37-20 in the later half.
Next up for the Tornado boys, they are scheduled to play a home game against Chenango Valley on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 7:45 p.m.

GREENE – The boys varsity basketball team of Greene, dominated their fellow Chenango County team of Afton on Friday evening with a 74-39 win over the Crimson Knights.
The Trojans were led by Spencer Klumpp who found his way to the basket for five field goals – while going 2-2 from the charity stripe – amounting to a team leading 14-point game. Klumpp was joined in the high scoring action by Breven Gilmore, whose five field goals resulted in the only other double-digit performance for the home team, as Gilmore snagged an even 10-points.
The second period of play is when the Trojans truly pulled away from Afton in the game – after leading the Crimson Knights at just 13-7 after one period – Greene's offense exploded in the second period, as Greene dropped a 24-point period on Afton, taking the 37-17 lead at the half. When halftime finished, Greene proved they were not finished, dropping another 20-point period on the Crimson Knight to bury their hopes of a comeback.
Greene was then slated to play a Saturday game against Deposit on Jan. 21.

HANCOCK – The B-G boys followed the play of their counterparts, taking a huge win over Hancock by a score of 56-32 this past Friday.
The game played on Friday, Jan. 20, saw the B-G boys blowout Hancock at home by a score of 18-5 in the very first period – setting the tone for their 24-point victory on the night.
Leading Bainbridge-Guilford in scoring was the duo of Trevor Haloquist at 16-points off of his five field goals; and Tyler Johnson who saw seven field goals for a 14-point game during the win.
Hancock would battle back in the second half, on the back of their leading scorer Lane Bass who snagged an even 10-points, posting a game high period of scoring in the second at 16-points – making the halftime score 31-21.
Down only 10-points, B-G settled in for the long-haul to try to pull off the road win. However, were treated with two duds of periods from Hancock. Hancock was held to just four points in the third, followed by a seven point fourth period – as B-G closed out the win outscoring the home team 25-11 for the win.
Next up for Bainbridge-Guilford, they are scheduled for a home game against Chenango Forks later on this evening, Monday, Jan. 23, at 7:15 p.m.

OXFORD – The Oxford girls basketball team was demolished at home by the Warriors of Walton during their Friday showdown, losing 42-14.
Offense was nearly nonexistent for the lady Blackhawks who trailed Walton by a generous score of 19-6 at the half.
Leading Oxford in the loss in the scoring column was a combination of seven players – who each snagged two-points a piece for the combined 14-point performance.
Posting their best period of the game in the third, Oxford saw scores from Kylie Roys, Allison Beckwith, and Jada Albin – as they entered into the final period down by a score of 27-12. The game was theoretically still in reach for Oxford who then saw Walton drop a game high 15 points in the final period to take the lead.
Next up for Oxford following the Friday night game they then hosted Marathon on Saturday, Jan. 21.

DEPOSIT – The Trojans boys varsity basketball team saw a loss go their way on Saturday, Jan. 21, following their Friday night win – as Deposit found a way to pull out the two-point win at 51-49.
Greene was led on the day by a fantastic performance from Will Williams who attacked the basket nine times for a 21-point day.
However, despite Williams solid day on the court, Greene fell to a 21-18 deficit at the half. Emerging from the half, the Trojans dropped 16-points on Deposit – who only could manage 10 in the third – taking the lead over Deposit as they headed into the final period at 34-31.
Up three points, the Trojans failed to hold the lead, as Deposit gathered their mental power to overcome the late deficit to claim a comeback win – dropping 15-points in the process for the victory.
Next up for Greene, they will travel to Windsor on Monday, Jan. 23, with a start time of 7:15 p.m.

OXFORD – Marathon came to town as they trounced the struggling girls on the Oxford varsity basketball team by a score of 54-28.
Making a better stand at home, Oxford showed their fans a better game on Saturday, Jan. 21, than the previous game had provided. Leading the lady Blackhawks in scoring was Jada Albin who notched a 10-point game under her belt following Saturday's loss.
Despite dropping to a 23-5 deficit after just one period, Marathon allowed Oxford to see their best period in sometime as the lady Blackhawks grabbed 14-points to head into the half.
The second half would see Marathon truly run away with the win, as Marathon up 32-19 at the half, outscored Oxford 22-9 in the second half of play to hand the Oxford girls their second loss at home over the weekend.
Next up for Oxford, they will travel to Harpursville on Tuesday, Jan. 24, where they are scheduled to play the lady Hornets at 7:15 p.m.

DEPOSIT – The lady Trojans emerged victorious in their Saturday game with Deposit, crushing them by a score of 50-17.
Greene's varsity girls basketball team saw an impressive all-around team effort – as all 10 girls scored in the winning effort on Jan. 21.
Leading Greene in their win was Emma Smith and Alyssa Sands – scoring 13 and 11-points respectively. Smith added 11 rebounds and five blocks in her efforts, while Sands has four steal in her limited play due to illness.
The lady Trojans strung together four strong periods of play – double-digit scoring in all – as they climbed to a solid 22-13 lead at the half. Emerging from the half, the mentality changed for Greene who essentially shut down the Deposit ladies.
Allowing just two-points a pice in the third and fourth periods of play, Greene was allowed to run free on the scoring side outscoring Deposit 28-4 to close out the road win.
Next up for Greene, they will be home against Morris on Monday, Jan. 23, with the game slated to begin at 7:15 p.m.
