Hull and Lane help lift Marauders to double OT win
SHERBURNE – Hunter Lane with a long-range snipe, Tyler Bigford staying perfect at 2-2 from the line in the first overtime, coupled with a Hunter Lane field goal and Sam Tuttle going 1-2 from the charity stripe. The double overtime win pulled out all the stops in a thriller, as these small victories for the Sherburne-Earlville boys basketball team piled up to lift them to a stunning 71-70 victory over the visiting Holland-Patent Golden Knights.
Despite the complete team effort in the win – an effort which saw four of the six Marauders who scored in game, earn points in the double overtime periods.
However, none would take the crowd by storm more than the performance that Matt Hull had on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Marauder senior – Hull proved his capabilities down the stretch – with the game on the line and directly following the crazy sequence that was required to reach double overtime. Hull methodically sliced open the Golden Knights for seven of his team high 23 points in the final overtime. With the game on the line, Hull stepped to the line twice – going 3-4 – while also driving for two field goals, as Hull would be the last person to touch the ball in the game, with his seven point overtime run to close the game, capping off a terrific win at home.
Hull wouldn’t be the only one in the contest to reach double-digit scoring for S-E as Hunter Lane managed a game producing 21 points, and Sam Tuttle tossed in an additional 11 in the win.
Down 24-28 at the half, S-E would need a jump start to kick themselves into gear for a potential win. They indeed did get said jump, a 14 point third period – led by Lane Hunter with eight points – landed the Marauders in a much closer contest at 40-38 heading into what they thought would be the final eight minutes of the contest.
S-E answered the call once again in the fourth to complete the comeback win in the fourth as Lane and company produced a game high in scoring for the period when they grabbed 18 points to take the lead in the fourth with a 1:04 left at 56-54 – Lane hit a field goal to reach the late lead. This fourth period was saw Matt Hull lead the scoring charge with eight points.
With a minute left in regulation, the Golden Knights star player Reinold Turner – team high 24 points – hit a solid basket with just :42 left, tying the contest at 56-56 and essentially delivering the blow that sent the game on its wild double overtime run.
Emerging from the madness with the hard-fought win at home, Sherburne-Earlville now moves to an overall record of 11-5 on the season.
Next up for the S-E boys, have earned a few days off from live-action. They will return to the court for their next game, on Friday, Feb. 3, at home when they host Central Valley Academy at 7 p.m.
