HARPURSVILLE— The Unadilla Valley girls varsity basketball team took to the road to play the Hornets of Harpursville on Monday, January 30, which saw the Storm claim the victory in the tightly contested match-up by a final score of 45-40.
As has been the case with a few of Chenango County’s teams this week free-throws were the difference maker in the contest, as the Storm shot 65% from the charity stripe compared to the visiting Hornets 44%.
“We shot really well from the foul line in the second half and that made a huge difference,” said head coach Brandi Whitbeck.
The first 16 minutes of the game remained in a stand-still with each team recording 18 points in the opening half. A big contributor to the game being knotted up at 18 was the defensive effort of the Hornets - closing out on UV’s sharpshooters from beyond the arc - not allowing any trifectas from finding their home insides the iron for the Storm both in the first and second halves.
However, the Hornets must’ve forgotten the inside presence of the Storm’s Shelby Meade who provided half of her team’s first half points with nine.
The start of the third quarter provided an increased offensive production for the lady Storm. With the Hornets now looking to control Meade, the pairing of Julia Oglesby and Megan Winton got the Storm rolling once again - combining for nine of their team’s 12 points in the quarter.
While the offensive gears began grinding for the Storm, the Hornets got their offense working too - recording 12 points of their own to keep the game knotted at 30 entering the final quarter of play.
Once again, UV’s Oglesby proved to be just too much for Harpursville, scoring seven out of her game high 19 points on the night within the final eight minutes.
Failing to get an inside game going, only recording three two-point field goals inside the arc the Hornets turned to shooting outside the zip code. Knocking only one three-pointer in the final period the Hornets were outmatched by the Storm and accepted defeat on their home court.
In addition to scoring 19 points in the game, Julia Oglesby pulled down eight rebounds – while teammate Shelby Meade helped Oglesby in the rebounding category grabbing eight boards of her own on her way to scoring 14 points. Samantha Cower led Harpursville scoring 11 with teammate Abbie Livermore pitching in 10 of her own.
The Storm (4-12) return to the hardwood for their senior night on Friday February 3, as they host the Blackhawks from Oxford with a start time at 7:15 p.m.
