OTSELIC VALLEY – The Otselic Valley boy’s varsity basketball team's struggles continued as of late, as they suffered two more consecutive losses this past week.
In the first game, which took place on Monday, Jan. 30, the Vikings suffered a tough defeat to DeRuyter on a final score of 61-51.
The action was end to end in the first quarter, with both teams trading buckets. DeRuyter took the smallest of leads going into the second. That’s where it all fell apart for OV. Their defense gave up 20 points, while the offense put up just nine, leaving them with a 12-point disadvantage at the half.
The Vikings fought valiantly to try and regain some points, but were ultimately never able to catch their opponents, and succumbed to the 10-point defeat.
“Our season has been a struggle this year, and we have yet to win a game,” said Otselic Valley head coach Jacob Preston following his side’s loss. “However, my players never gave up. They played with heart and with respect for the game.”
Jordan Baerga had another monster game, as he was the game high scorer, knocking down 21 points, as well as adding 11 rebounds. Tanner Costa had 12 points and four assists in the loss.

OTSELIC VALLEY – On Wednesday night, Feb. 1, the Vikings hosted Stockbridge. This game was nowhere near as close of a contest as their monday evening game, as the Vikings experienced a 34-point loss.
“With only six players for the night, we were missing two of three top scorers on the team,” said Preston. “I knew it was going to be a tough one.”
The Vikings clearly missed their top scorers, as their offense struggled throughout the first half, and only mustered up eight points. Things didn’t go much better on the other end of the court, and OV found themselves in a 25-point hole at the interval.
Their play improved in the second half, but this game was never really much of a contest, as Stockbridge cruised to the victory.
The bright spot in the loss for OV was Tanner Costa, who stepped up in absence of key players. He scored 17 of his side’s 31 total points on the night.
Next up for the Otselic Valley boys, they will be home for their next game, as the Vikings host Madison on Friday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m.
Otselic Valley: L. Hackett, 2 0-0 4; T. Costa, 6 5-10 17; T. Bard, 0; D. Stone, 0 2-2 2; J. Graham, 1 1-2 3; T. McCarthy, 2 0-0 5.
