A night to remember, S-E falls on senior night

SHERBURNE – The Sherburne-Earlville varsity volleyball team had their sights set on the win – a magical win on their senior night that would help them avoid an a defeated season – however, momentum was truly switched off leading to a 3-1 loss last Friday
The home loss on Friday, Feb. 3, and what was the last time playing on their home for S-E's four graduating seniors (Alexa Bates, Morgan Homann, Abbey Stratton, and Taylor Grant) – gave the crowd quite a contrast in performance from set to set. Up 1-0 over Stockbridge Valley, after showing great prowess on the court in their first set to win 25-19 – the gym needed to be evacuated due to a fire alarm going off just as the second set began, SB led 1-0 at the time.
When all was settled and the second set resumed – the lady Marauders who had Stockbridge playing scared after the first set seemed to have lost their edge, eventually falling to the tie at 1-1. The 1-1 set score was the result of a second set which saw S-E claim a 10-10 draw, before being stifled to a final set score of 25-14.
With redemption on their mind – and the momentum killing fire alarm hopefully in the past – the lady Marauders looked to reclaim their footing in the third set. S-E fought in the set to a score of 25-17, falling to Stockbridge now for the second time in a row to draw the match to 2-1.
Down 2-1 and the entire game hanging in the balance, Stockbridge attacked in the final set, hoping to put away the Marauders quietly. However, a resilient S-E squad – although down 14-4 at one point – did attempt to claw their way back from the depths. S-E saw solid play in the final set, which earned them a solid run to the eventual score of 25-14.
With the loss on Friday, Sherburne-Earlville officially completed an 0-16 season for 2016-2017.
“This group has worked very hard over the years,” said Sherburne-Earlville head coach Ed Holmquist. “I am proud of them and they have bright futures.”
Leading S-E on the night with individual statistics was Alexa Bates (six kills, four blocks, 9 digs), Cheznie Lounsbury (eight blocks, three aces, six digs, and seven kills), and Abbey Stratton (12 digs, four assists, and one kill).
