Oxford girls bowling Claims MAC division title
OXFORD – The Oxford girls varsity bowling team recently made some history when they won the Midstate Athletic Conference Championship for the first time since 1970.
The lady Blackhawks finished the regular season with an impressive 41-7 overall record to edge Bainbridge-Guilford and Hancock by a slim margin.
The only teams to take points from Oxford this season were the Bobcats (3 points), and Hancock (4 points).
Oxford will be looking for a continued success in the program, as they will be impressively returning all five starters next season, including their top duo of Jourdan Pinney and Erin Howard.
Pinney and Howard finished in the top five of the league for the 2016-2017 season – while leading the way for the lady Blackhawks this season was Jourdan Pinney who finished as the number two ranked bowler in the MAC league. Howard, only and eighth grader, was close behind as the number three ranked bowler in the division.
Additionally to Pinney and Howard's continued success – Destiny Beang won most pins over average.
According to Oxford head coach, Lance Thorne, “Pinney and Howard are cousins and basically grew up at Family Recreation Lanes in Norwich. It's a family owned business and the girls spend much of their free time either bowling or working at the lanes. Owners Frank and Sue Ross have been instrumental in the success of the bowling program, spending countless hours with our team during practices, matches, and on weekends. Long time volunteer assistant coach Ben Pierson has also spent time grooming kids to be the best they can be, and the time spent has paid off.”
Additionally, Thorne indicated that following the 1970's the bowling team failed to exist at Oxford Academy, until approximately 2009 when a student survey revealed that kids were in favor of adding bowling as a team sport once again.
In seven short years since the the reintroduction of bowling at Oxford, the Blackhawks have produced three individual sectional champions, three individual state qualifiers, a sectional championship for the boys, and a division championship for the girls.
“Winning attracts kids to the sport, and we have had a lot of success in that area,” said coach Thorne.
The Oxford girls will look to improve on their 2016-2017 season as they head to the Section IV Championships on Saturday Feb. 11, at Midway Lanes in Vestal.
