Lady Trojans weather the Storm on senior night

GREENE – A huge first half push from the the Greene girls basketball team allowed the Trojans to fully enjoy a night of celebration – walking out of their hometown gymnasium the victors of a matchup with Unadilla Valley by a score of 53-27.
Prior to the start of the contest on Tuesday, Feb. 9, the Trojan fans celebrated their two graduating seniors – Nicole Flohr and Mary Klecha.
If one were to watch only the second half of the play, it would seem to be more of a competitive game which unfolded. However, Greene simply shut down any and nearly all offensive efforts of UV in the first half – allowing just five points to be scored by the visitors.
Greene, instead of a dominant force on the offensive end in the first half, saw an even distribution of scoring come from six different athletes, en route to their 19-5 lead when the buzzer sounded.
That is when Unadilla Valley found a groove – emerging from the half, and down 14 points – UV proceeded to drop 12 points, their highest in a period on the home team.
However, the lady Trojans would have none of it. When pushed, Greene pushed back – defending their senior night rights and their home court – the lady Trojans amounted a period which saw 21 total points scored as they held the UV Storm at bay. Leading the charge in the period for Greene was Alyssa Sands who hit half of her team high 16 points in scoring in the period alone. Unadilla Valley remained competitive down the stretch with Julia Ogelsby snagging eight of her team high 15 points in the final eight minutes. The attempted comeback – down 40-17 – Uv was stifled once again by Greene who outscored the Storm 13-10 in the final minutes.
Greene saw McKenna Sergi toss in seven steals and 10 points in the win, while Alyssa Sands recorded five steals to go along with her 16 points. Senior Nicole Flohr contributed heavily in the win, hitting two long three's to contribute 10 points of her own.
“We played very well,” said Greene head coach Dave Gorton on the senior night win.
Unadilla Valley would only have one player in the double-digit range for scoring in the loss, as Ogelsby snagged team high 15 – going 3-4 from the charity stripe.
Next up for both Unadilla Valley and Greene girls varsity basketball, the two teams will play this coming Friday in the MAC league tournament. UV will face Unatego on Friday; while Greene (10-7 overall) will travel to Walton on Friday, Feb. 10, at 7:15 p.m.
