Lady Trojans split over weekend, advance to second round of MAC league tournament

GREENE – The Greene girls varsity basketball team saw increased action this past weekend – not only did they travel to Walton for a MAC league tournament win but the very next day the lady Trojans took to the road again for a game against Chenango Valley.
WALTON – Coming into the weekend, Greene sat at a solid 10-7 overall record with a league record of 6-5. This placed the Greene girls as the seventh seed in the MAC tournament – which began the semifinal round on Friday, Feb. 10 – Greene traveled to Walton (sixth seed, 6-5 league record), a Friday night game in which the Trojans earned the win at 51-34.
The duo of Alyssa Sands and McKenna Sergi took the court by storm this past Friday, as the pair combined for 26 points in the contest – Sergi 14, Sands 12 – helping to lift Greene to the road win.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing for the Trojans, as the Warriors looked to defend their home court to the tune of an 8-8 ball game after the first period.
The second period was sparked by a pair of field goals from Emma Smith of Greene who inspired a pair of Sergi long-balls and a Sands field goal – all amounting to outscoring Walton in the second period 12-6. Greene took the lead at the half, at 20-14.
Emerging from the half, Greene had Walton's number, as the two evenly matched teams on paper proved to be nothing of the sort on the court. Greene pulled away for the first round MAC tournament win – outscoring Walton 31-20 in the second half.
Leading the way for Greene was Sergi with 14 points, and Sands with 12 – while Emma Smith tossed in none points of her own. In the loss for Walton, Olivia Harby led the Warriors on the court with her game-high 17 points scored. Impressively, Greene's defense allowed just three Walton field goals in the entire contest – as nearly all their points came from three-point shots of the charity stripe.

Emerging from the half, Greene dropped nine more points on CV, while allowing just six from the home team taking the lead to 23-19 into the final eight minutes. A Nicole Flohr three, an Emma Smith field goal and Alyssa Sands going 4-4 in the third period from the line – helped to pull the Trojans away for what looked like yet another win.
However, It was then that the wheels started to come off and the signs of wear – playing back-to-back games – truly showed. Greene was outscored 13-4 down the stretch, as Chenango Valley's Bella LoVuolo went off in the fourth – snagging nine of her game high 14 points to rally the Warriors past the Trojans.
