WATKINS GLEN – 49 local wrestlers from all around Chenango County entered into the both the Section IV and Section III tournament's this past weekend – only seven will be moving on to Albany as definite locks.
The lower half of the county saw Norwich (13), BGAH (13), Greene (6), Oxford (4), and Unadilla Valley (1), travel to Watkins Glen for a two-day solely Division II small-schools tournament. 2017 marked the first year since 2004 that Section IV has split the DI and DII Sectional tournaments up – a move that saw Chenango County dominate the DII side bringing home seven champions of the potential 15 spots.
The northern half of the county did not fair quite as well – bringing 12 of the 49 total local wrestlers – Sherburne-Earlville (8), and Otselic Valley (4). None were able to lay claim to a first place finish, a mark needed to guarantee a trip to Albany, on Feb. 24, and 25, for the New York State Tournament.
However, Norwich laid claim to a fantastic tournament – topping off a fine season by any means going 12-4 overall as team – and now breaking their school's record for most ever finalists and eventual champions at the Section IV tournament.
Norwich – who brought 13 wrestlers – showed grit throughout the two days, as six wrestlers found their way through the ranks to the finals – with four guaranteed to earn trips to Albany.
BGAH managed a better team finish with their 13 wrestlers – topping Norwich to finish second on the day at 191 – behind champion team Tioga at 197. However, BGAH would suffer some big losses in their finals matches – moving five wrestlers to the finals, while only bringing home three champions – due to two losses to the aforementioned Tornado.
Greene, Oxford, and Unadilla Valley would see no champions on the weekend – but would earn some solid mat-time where various wrestlers earned spots on the podium.
Section IV DII local results:
• 99 pounds: Norwich's Dante Geislinger highlighted the weight class, as the freshman third-seed gunned for a championship spot following a semifinals win over second-seeded Chandler Merwin of Walton-Delhi at 5-0. Geislinger finished 2-1 on the day when he was met in the finals by top-seeded John Worthing of Tioga. Geislinger suffered a finals loss to Worthing by way of a pin at just :33 into the match. Geislinger does have a chance to advance to the New York State tournament as a possible wild-card.
“John Worthing is a returning section champ, state finalist last year. He pinned Dante earlier in the year and we were hoping this time was going to be different. We got into a scramble, neither one had control but Dante ended up getting to his back and was defensive pinned,” said Norwich head coach Bob Hagenbuch.
Notably in the weight class, Oxford's Cooper Rice, an eighth grader was able to secure a respectable finish. Rice snagged an early win over Payton Bennett of Maine-Endwell by way of pin at 3:26, before dropping a match to Merwin by major decision at 20-9. Rice went on to three wrestle-back matches – suffering another loss to Merwin which sent him to the eventual fifth place finish. Rice finished the weekend going 4-2, on the day and held an overall record of 23-13 on the season.
• 106 pounds: BGAH against Norwich, first-seed against second seed – the championship match was filled with twists and turns as Mikey Squires of Norwich (second-seed) was able to secure a 3-2 win over Brody Oleksak (first seed) to give Norwich their first of four sectional champions.
“This is the third time they met this year, every time they wrestle its a coin flip,” said coach Hagenbuch.
Squires looked to be on the attack early, securing an early 2-0 lead with a takedown over Oleksak. Squires rode out this early lead to hang on for the close 3-2 victory – ensuring his trip to Albany.
“Mikey has been working hard all year, he is one of the hardest workers in the room and it has paid off so far,” said coach Hagenbuch. Squires finished the tournament 4-0, with a big win over Nate Lehr of Chenango Valley in the semifinals at 3-1 to help lift him to the championship. Oleksak of BGAH finished the day going 3-1 – with a much easier glide to the finals where the one loss occurred. It remains unknown if Oleksak will garner a wild-card slot to states.
Notably, Brady Smith of Oxford and Jordan Taft of Greene did participate in the weight – neither were able to earn a spot on the podium. Taft finished 0-2 on the day, while Smith grabbed a win over Taft to help raise his weekend record to 2-1.
• 113 pounds: Norwich grabbed another championship – they were not happy with merely just one champion – Eli Rodriguez, the third-seed at the weight knocked off the top-seeded (season long) wrestler at the weight Caleb Robinson in the finals by a 8-6 margin. Rodriguez's performance on the weekend not only earned him a trip to states for the second-straight year, but it also earned him the award of Most Outstanding Wrestler in Section IV. Rodriguez successfully defeated Devin Todd of Deposit-Hancock (second-seed) in the semifinals by fall at 5:20, avenging an earlier season loss to Todd in the Windsor Christmas Tournament.
“He has been working hard in the room, he was in a little bit of a down situation there at the beginning of the season. But he has been working hard on his feet and we knew he could be in the finals and beat Robinson,” said coach Hagenbuch. “He really dominated Robinson, a lot of people were shocked, but we weren’t. We know Eli, he is in our room everyday we've seen what he can do.
Rodriguez jumped out to a commanding lead over Robinson before relaxing somewhat – giving up a crucial five points when turned to his own back. Rodriguez, then down three with a minute left chose to cut Robinson allowing one point for the escape. That is when Rodriguez ripped off a solid takedown narrowing the gap from four to two points. Rodriguez repeated those steps – cutting Robinson for the escape before taking him down once more to tie the match sending it to an 8-8 overtime. One more takedown sealed the deal in overtime, as Rodriguez upset all of the predictions to defeat Robinson 8-6 in OT.
Notably in the weight, Haiden Burns of BGAH and Hunter Wells of Greene did wrestle. Neither were able to place in the bracket, as Burns 1-2 on the weekend, and Wells 1-2 also (suffering an early loss to Rodriguez).
• 120 pounds: The weight saw no local champions, as second-seeded Austin Lamb of Tioga defeated top-seeded Caleb Wiggins of Chenango Valley 9-6 in the finals. Seth Foster of BGAH did wrestle in the weight but finished 0-2 on the weekend.
• 126 pounds: No local champion was crowned for the second consecutive weight – as top-seeded Daniel Koll of Lansing completed his sweep of the weight with a 2-1 victory over Corey Swartz of Windsor in the finals. Despite no champion from Chenango County being crowned – it was the lone weight where Unadilla Valley made their appearance. Morgan Lakin, the third-seed fell to a fifth place finish in the weight. Lakin completes his unique season for the Storm with an overall record of 24-11 – unique because he represented Unadilla Valley – him and him alone.
“The biggest part of this is people understand what dedication this young man has. As a 14 year old kid, we drove back and forth to Sherburne everyday because the other people that were going to wrestle on the team took the easy way out. For Morgan yo compete at the level he did is amazing. Many, many thanks have to go to the Sherburne-Earlville wrestling team and their coaches – Bim Palmer, and Brian Hicks – they took a young man that basically had no identity and said you know what you're part of our team,” said UV head coach Ben Mumbulo. “For what Morgan had to go through and what he did this year. I am pretty proud of him. Matt Osborne the Athletic Director, Bob Mackey the Superintendent and Frank Johnson the Principal at UV. Through all this they were the big supporters, they didn’t drop the program. Our goal is to get more kids involved next year.”
Lakin, the lone representative for the 2016-2017 season for UV Storm wrestling may have finished fifth – reaching the semifinals before falling to eventual second place finisher Corey Swartz (loss by pin 1:06) – but his biggest accomplishment may have been maintaining his success on the mat while keeping a struggling program alive. Lakin capped off his sectional appearance with a win over Damien Knapp of BGAH by a 5-2 decision to take fifth.
“Corey is a good wrestler. Morgan had a real nice shot, Morgan was in good position and took the kid to his hip,” said Mumbulo of Lakin's semifinals match. “Next thing we know, he had Morgan in a cradle. The kid was in the finals for a reason.”
Notably in the weight, Knapp of BGAH finished 3-3 on the weekend with a sixth place finish, while Norwich's Cristobal Caballero 2-2 on the weekend, falling one round short of placing.
• 132 pounds: No local wrestlers were again named champions at the weight – as third-seeded Bryant Sexton of SVEC defeated top-seeded Cooper Hall of Deposit-Hancock 8-4 in the finals. BGAH was hoping for a champion at the weight with Cody Ferrara garnering a second-seed, however, Ferrara was forced to forfeit his semifinals match all the way through wrestle-backs – eventually placing sixth going after earning two wins to start the tournament.
• 138 pounds: Instead BGAH was forced to wait one more weight, until second-seeded Ben Bivar was up. Bivar took his spot from the second-seed and ran to the finals grabbing three straight pins along the way. That is when Bivar snagged a 4-3 win over top-seeded Paddy Lupole of Susquehanna Valley – punching his ticket to Albany.
Notably in the weight, BGAH saw another wrestler in the weight nearly make a finals berth as fourth-seeded Austin Eggelston grabbed two wins to advance to the semifinals before falling to Lupole by a score of 5-1 – Eggelston finished in fourth place with a loss to Levi Wormuth of Deposit-Hancock by pin at 4:58.
Greene, Oxford and Norwich all made appearances in the weight as well – with Greene's Harrison Stone earning the most success with a sixth place finish – dropping two of his three losses on the day to BGAH's Eggelston as he finished 3-3 with a win over Brady Hope of CV with 10-3 win to take sixth. Oxford's Darren Law finished 2-2 on the weekend falling right before the placing round; while Norwich's Dakota Powers finished 0-2.
• 145 pounds: Enter Ty Rifanburg at 145 pounds. Ty, cruised to Norwich's third Section IV championship with two pins a technical fall in the semifinals, all before defeating BGAH's Shane Hoover (second-seed) in the finals by a close 4-0.
“Shane has been wrestling really, really good as of late, he has been wrestling tough and he was on a mission. We knew it was going to be a closer match than last time around (10-1 Ty won),” said coach Hagenbuch. “Ty is still a little banged up but we knew Ty was going to find a way to be a returning Section IV champion. He is a back-to-back sectional champ and took fifth in states last year. We are looking for Ty to get higher on the podium this year.”
Shane earned his mark with three consecutive pins in the tournament, but was met with a force he could not overcome in the finals – finishing 3-1 on the day – after defeating Tony Giovagnoli of Oneonta in the semifinals in a non-contest win by pin at 1:15.
Notably in the weight, Greene's Logan Kennedy did wrestle, however, Kennedy did not place as he went 1-2 on the weekend.
• 152 pounds: In one of the marquee match ups of the 15 match finals – Norwich's Cole Rifanburg (top-seed) met Marathon's Shvunte Searcy (second-seed). This marked the third meeting of the two state-bound wrestlers – Cole taking the first two for wins – however, Searcy bested Cole in the biggest match of the season yet, winning 3-2 in the finals.
“Cole wrestled defensively for the first half of the match. He didn’t really wrestle his match, wasn’t really aggressive. He was called for stalling in the first period which wasn’t like him and that changed the match up completely compared to the past meetings,” said coach Hagenbuch. “He wrestled not to lose, instead of wrestling to win. It is hard to beat a tough competitor three times. We pretty much know that either one of them was going to get a wild-card to states so I wish Cole would’ve opened up. But you'll see a different demeanor in Cole when we go to the state tournament.”
Cole remains a heavy favorite to be wild-carded to the New York State tournament where a potential fourth match up between the two is a possibility.
“Cole only had three losses going into the finals (on the season) and won every tournament this year. Beating Searcy twice already makes him an automatic bid to me. He (Cole) has been the heart and sole of this team all year. I am looking forward to seeing what he will do in the state tournament,” said coach Hagenbuch.
Notably in the weight, BGAH's Hayden Lewis did wrestle, however, after an early win over Kyle Leonard of Susquehanna Valley, Lewis suffered back-to back losses to finish 1-2 on the weekend.
• 160 pounds: BGAH returned to the finals match for some of their finest wrestling – starting with a championship run for Madison Hoover at 160 pounds. Hoover snagged a trip to Albany with a 7-0 win over Mike Wilmot of Windsor. Hoover ripped off three easy wins en route to the finals, picking up a pin, a technical fall, and a major decision before his finals match that was decided by decision – completing the sweep and finishing 4-0 atop the podium.
Notably, no other local wrestler placed in the weight – however, Norwich's Keegan Wright and Greene's Noah Kennedy each enjoyed a solid weekend. Wright and Kennedy each finished one round short of placing – each snagging identical wins to go 2-2.
• 170 pounds: Austin Carr completed the Section IV Champions for BGAH – taking home his second straight championship. Carr, the top-seed, earned an exciting 3-2 win over Maine-Endwell's Micah Miller in the finals at just 3-2. Miller found his way to the finals when he defeated Norwich's Jake Franklin (third-seed) by 10-3; while Carr enjoyed similar success defeating Cameron Pickering of Odessa Montour in the semifinals by a score of 10-4. Carr was able to evade a headlock in the first period of the finals, instead taking Miller down. Following the second period escape from Carr, he led Miller 3-1 – allowing a mere escape from Miller to take the final score to 3-2.
Notably, Franklin of Norwich fell to a sixth place finish following his crushing loss to Miller in the semifinals, going 2-3 on the weekend.
• 182 pounds: Second-seeded Brennan Slater, a Norwich junior snagged Norwich's last championship – grabbing his chance at a state appearance with an upset – thrill filled win at the weight. After much last second commotion, it was Slater who's hand was raised with an 11-9 win over top-seeded Dylan Dunham of Whitney Point.
“We haven’t seen Dunham all year. Going into the finals we didn’t know what to expect out of Dunham, but we knew Slater would give a tough match,” said coach Hagenbuch. “ Slater wrestled well and had a nice lead at 7-4. We wrestle non-stop all six minutes, but with :15 seconds left he was turned to his back for a five point swing. I thought we would lose the match, I was in shock, but Slater rolled him through for four points and win it at the buzzer at 11-9. We had to go to the score table to sort out all the last second scoring.”
Notably, BGAH's Bradley Wilson did wrestle at the weight but finished 0-2 on the weekend.
• 195 pounds: No local champion was crowned at the weight – as Richie Knapp of Susquehanna Valley pinned Jack Riegal of Chenango Valley at 2:54. Oxford's Dakota Friedel finished 2-2 on the weekend falling just short of the placing round. Greene's Ty Nolan finished 0-2 in the weight; while Norwich's Angel Francis finished 0-2 as well.
• 220 pounds: No local champion was crowned, instead a former Oxford Blackhawk stood atop the podium. Garyn Huntley of Unatego snagged a 5-2 win at the weight over Colton VanDriesen of Owego. Notably, Norwich's Tyler Rice, the third-seed, snagged an early win before falling in the quarterfinals. Rice, just an eighth grader, battled his way to three-wins in the wrestle-backs for a fifth place finish in the weight going 4-2 on the weekend.
• 285 pounds: No local champion was crowned at the weight – as Jacob Morrison of Unatego earned a championship win by pin at 1:37 over Leroy Williams of Oneonta. BGAH's Nick Decker did see action in the weight class – but finished 2-2 on the weekend falling just short of the placing rounds.
On the Section III DII side, the lone wrestler to place from Chenango County was Otselic Valley's Nate Purtell. Purtell was drawn in at the 99 pound weight where he finished 24-5 on the season taking home a fifth place finish on the weekend. Purtell finished 3-2 to claim fifth.
