OWEGO – Powerhouse Maine-Endwell claimed it’s sixth straight Section IV, Class B Sectional tournament title in Owego last Saturday, Feb. 18, – with a young Norwich Tornado team rounding out the field of eight teams, however showing great promise for the future.

On their way to claiming the top spot on the podium, M-E had seven first-place finishers, including in the 200-meter medley relay, the 200-meter freestyle, and the 500-meter freestyle events.
The Tornado team recorded five personal best marks on the day.
In the 200-meter medley relay – Aidan Sullivan, Griffin Frank, Matthew Giglio, and Jacob Shoemaker – the Norwich squad finished eighth, with a season best time of 2:05.22, a .61-drop from the preliminary trials.
Frank earned a ninth place finish in the 500-meter freestyle event, with a personal record time of 5:33.27, over three seconds faster than his previous best.
The 200-meter freestyle relay team – Matthew Giglio, Ayden Hagar, Dakota Spina, and Cameron Pittsley – a team composed of all freshman, recorded a personal best time of 1:54.71 to claim a sixth place finish; while the 400-meter freestyle relay team – Matthew Giglio, Jacob Shoemaker, Aidan Sullivan, and Griffin Frank – also clocked a personal best time of 4:07.39, five seconds faster than their previous best, to earn an eighth place finish.

Following the first day of the Section IV Class B diving sectionals, which was held in Norwich on Friday, Feb. 17, Giglio advanced to the finals the next day after qualifying with a sixth place finish in the preliminary round.
“I am very proud of how this young team came together this year and competed,” said Norwich swimming and diving head coach Kevin Diefenbacher, despite his team finishing in last place in the 2016-2017 Class B sectional tournament. “The future is very bright for these young men as they progress through their next three years of high school swimming and diving.”
Norwich had seven swims in the finals this past Saturday, with five of the seven attempts going for personal best times, as they dropped a combined 13.21 seconds – coupled with a preliminary round earlier in the week which saw the Tornado grab eight PR times while dropping 12.78 seconds.
“For our young team to come back to finals and do this showed that all the hard work they did during the season paid off,” said coach Diefenbacher.
