Trojan swimmers finish seventh at Section IV Class C tournament
OWEGO – The Section IV, Class C Sectional Finals of boy’s swimming and diving took place in Owego last Saturday, Feb. 18. Chenango Forks claimed the overall top spot on the podium, accumulating 446 total points on their way to being crowned champions. The Oneonta Yellowjackets claimed second place, with 378 total points – while Lansing finished in third place, with 257 total points.
Chenango County was represented by the Trojans Greene, who earned a seventh place finish from a field of eight, earning 130 total points.
On their way to winning the tournament, Chenango Forks dominated the relay events. They achieved first-place finishes in the 400-meter freestyle relay, the 200-meter freestyle relay, and a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter independent medley relay.
The Trojans entered the Sectional Tournament with an 0-10 record in dual meets throughout the season, so head coach MK Dugue said that the team focused more on individual accomplishments and goals throughout the season. This was their chance to shine.
That was to be the theme for Greene once more, as almost every swimmer on the team recorded a personal best in the tournament. Some top performances from the Trojans on the day came from Dominic Williams, who earned a third-place finish in the diving event, with a score of 268.25 points, Matt DeJager, who produced a fourth-placed finish in the 100-meter breaststroke, recording a personal best time of 1:11.53 in the process; and Gray Reid, who recorded a personal best time of 5:42.88 in the 500-meter freestyle event, on his way to a seventh place finish.
“With the goals that we had for the season, we were very successful,” said an optimistic coach Dugue. “I am proud of what our guys did and what they accomplished by the end of the season. I look forward to next year and hopefully (we'll) grow our team by a couple of guys.”
