Norwich YMCA BOLTs thrive at Utica track and field meet

UTICA – The BOLTs, Norwich Family YMCA's/USATF track team, had an impressive outing at the USATF Adirondack Region's Indoor Track & Field Championship on Saturday, Feb. 25, that saw all 21 BOLTs athletes earn first, second, or third place finishes in their respective events.
It's reported that the number of BOLTs athletes far surpassed any other team present at the event that was held at Utica College, and as evident in their finishes, participants on the BOLTs team were among the premier athletes in attendance.
The BOLTs track and field team – created and coached by Norwich Family YMCA's Health and Fitness Director Shannon Gawronski – was originally formed in spring of 2016 in an effort to promote track and field for youth ages six-to-18 in the Chenango County region and beyond.
According to a release from the BOLTs team, the program is intended to fill a void where no such competitive track and field program exists for primary and intermediary school-aged children. Additionally, it offers an indoor track and field venue where athletes can compete that is lacking at some primary, intermediary, and middle school levels.
The BOLTs team also offers middle and high school students an opportunity to compete in a track and field program during the summer months.
For middle and high school students who compete in other sports, the BOLTs program allows such athletes the convenience of also competing in any BOLTs-participating meet. BOLTs athletes can compete in as many as eight track and field meets each season.
The meets are sponsored by both the USATF and the Empire State Sports Council (ESSC). The ESSC is the successor to the once popular Empire State Games.
In the two seasons that the BOLTs have been competing, the program has involved over 40 youth athletes ranging from age six-to-17 with youth from Guilford, McDonough, Norwich, Oxford, and Sidney all participating.
The team also offers athletes aged 19-and-over an opportunity to compete. On Feb. 25, at the Utica meet, it is reported that athletes' ages ranged from five-to-89 years old.
