NORWICH – With a thriller four-point victory over Newark Valley on Saturday, Feb. 25, the fans of the Purple Tornado are hoping for not as close as a game later on this evening, when the top-seeded Tornado (15-5) take on the fourth-seeded Sabers from Susquehanna Valley (10-9).
The Sabers reached their way to the semifinals with a blowout 75-48 victory over the Oneonta Yellowjackets last Thursday night, Feb. 23.
The Sabers were led by their senior forward Austin Haskell who put up monstrous numbers in the game with 33 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists – as he willed the Sabers to the semifinal game.
Sam Chapman pitched in 10 points for the Sabers, along with Jarred Freije and Tim Hawley adding in 11 and 10 points respectively for SV.
The undersized Yellowjackets were eaten alive on the boards by SV ultimately ending up in the lopsided score.
The Tornado on the other hand, received 20 points from Chris Jeffrey, 17 from Tre Bonham and 15 from Dashawn King in their Section IV Class B opener, ultimately the Tornado survived and advanced and will have all hands on deck when they welcome the Sabers to town, on Feb. 28.
The two clubs squared off in their first game of the season as the Tornado traveled down Route 12 and took the game in stride winning 63-56. In that game, the only double-digit scorer for SV was the aforementioned Haskell who punched in 27 points in the loss.
For Norwich, Bonham scored 20 points on seven field goals and two of three free-throws, King scored 17, and Jeffrey added 10. The biggest differential in the scoring column came down to the three-pointers made for each team. Trey Green nailed the lone three-point basket for the Sabers, meanwhile, Norwich cashed in their eight trifectas – four from Bonham, two from Marcus Cashman and one each from King and Michael Carson.
The Tornado face a tough test in the Sabers if they want to make it back to the Floyd L. Maines Arena to compete for yet another Section IV crown.
Susquehanna Valley is a worthy opponent and with their leader in Haskell who has already had a 30 point game under his belt offensively, he’ll be the one guy that the Tornado defense will have to stop.
Tuesday, Feb. 28, marks the Section IV Class B semifinal game with the game slated to begin at 7 p.m. at Norwich High School – and a chance at a Section IV finals berth on the line.
