BAINBRIDGE – It’s been seven years since Dave Gorton last took his Trojan girl’s to the Section IV Class C semifinals. Unfortunately, they will have to wait yet another year to end the drought. The Greene girl’s succumbed to defeat in the quarterfinals yet again, this time at the hands of the Bainbridge-Guilford Bobcats, last Friday, Feb. 24.
Situated just 16 miles apart, it always proves to be a heated affair when the local rivalry between the Trojans and the Bobcats face off, and this time, things were no different.
It took a heroic effort from B-G star Abigail Selfridge to separate the sides. Selfridge accounted for 10 of the Bobcats 13 points in the final eight minutes to ensure that her side advanced to the semifinals.
In what was a grueling contest, matters were closely contested throughout. Every time that one team seemed to have the upper hand, the other would charge right back into the action. After the opening quarter, B-G held the slimmest of leads outscoring the Trojans 11-10.
The battle for supremacy continued in the second quarter, as both sides notched 13 points apiece. B-G took a one-point lead into the interval at 24-23.
Both teams gave it their all in the second half, and after the third quarter, the game was all tied up, at 37 points apiece.
The Trojan offense just seemed to run out of gas at the wrong time. They scored just four points in the final eight minutes, while giving up 13 on the defensive end, and ultimately suffered the rough defeat.
Reflecting upon the loss after the game, Greene head coach Dave Gorton was extremely proud of the effort that his side put forth.
“We played very well. (It’s) a tough loss because we played well enough to win. We would have beaten most teams on Friday night. (We) played great defense, and we took smart shots and didn’t turn the ball over much.” said Gorton who also cited B-G’s Abigail Selfridge and her massive impact on the result of the game. “We made a couple of mistakes late, and (Abigail) Selfridge made us pay for them. She scored 10 points in the fourth quarter and her rebounding was the difference.”
Selfridge was undoubtedly the unanimous MVP on the night, as she recorded a double-double, with a game-high 19 points, along with 15 rebounds. B-G's Megan Palmatier added 10 points and 12 rebounds in her side’s crucial victory.
Best in the loss for Greene was McKenna Sergi, who had 11 points, along with six rebounds, and Alyssa Sands, who had a team-high 15 points on the night for the lady Trojans, along with five assists. In the loss to Bainbridge-Guilford, Greene concludes their 2016-2017 campaign with an overall record of 12-9.
Following the critical win, the lady Bobcats will be hoping to make its first Section IV playoff final since the 2014-2015 season, where they lost to Watkins Glen.
But first, the second-seeded Bobcats will have to get past third-seed Moravia. Moravia is notably coming off of a strong showing against number six-seed Unatego, where they won on a final score of 49-43.
In the other semifinal matchup, Elmira Notre Dame will face off against Watkins Glen. If B-G can secure a victory against Moravia, it could set up a tantalizing chance for them to avenge their loss on the biggest stage to top-seeded Watkins Glen.
The Bobcats will travel to Tompkins Cortland Community College, in Cortland, to take on Moravia this later on this evening, Feb. 28. Tip-off in that game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
