CONKLIN – Eight minutes and seven points is what separated the Purple Tornado girls basketball team from a chance to advance to a third straight class B championship game during their 2015-16 campaign as they fell to their nemesis’ from Susquehanna Valley for the second straight year in the Section IV playoffs.
The previous year, the Tornado dropped a 55-49 decision to the Sabers in the Section IV Class B finale and from there SV torched the rest of New York State on their way to a state title.
“12 months ago we were in this exact same position” said Norwich head coach Josh Bennett of the impending collision course with Susquehanna Valley. “We have a lot of seniors that are really looking forward to this game. Those kids that were in the war last year, that really want to be back in that gym and have another shot.”
The positives for the Tornado include their two leading scorers from last year’s sectional game in Meghan Komendarek and Kara Evans who had 15 and seven points respectively, are back.
From their only match-up this season, the Sabers beat Norwich 65-43 at Norwich. However, the Tornado faced severe foul trouble throughout the game, but managed to only allow one SV player – Erin Nolan – to score double-digits with 11. The positives for the Tornado is that they played without guard Taylor Hansen and swing-forward Nicole Jeffrey in that match-up.
While Susquehanna Valley maintains a hearty helping of interior size within the paint with the aforementioned Nolan and 6’4” sophomore Maeve Donnelly – Norwich has a plethora of guards to choose from such as Halea Eaton, Triniti Myers, Makenzie Maynard, Katelyn Dowdall, Hansen, Jeffrey, and Cierra Sherman.
This game has all the makings of a memorable one, and for some doubters of the Tornado who may think they don’t have what it takes to make-up a 22 point deficit?
The lady Tornado avenged a 22 point loss to the Seton Catholic Saints in the 2015 Section IV semifinals winning 55-51.
And yes, the make-up of that Seton team is virtually the same one that is currently locked in at the number three slot in the New York State Class B rankings.
The script is there, the stage is set, and March begins on Wednesday – can the Tornado overcome their ghosts of years past and set the tone for March Madness?
Norwich has just that chance when they travel later on this evening, Feb. 28, to Susquehanna Valley and take on the Sabers for a spot in the 2017 Section IV Class B title game, with tip-off slated for 6 p.m.
