CORTLAND – For the first time since the 2014-2015 season, the Bainbridge-Guilford girl’s varsity basketball team will be going back to the Section IV Class C finals.
The second-seeded Bobcats triumphed over third-seeded Moravia last night, Feb. 28, on a final score of 46-37.
A strong second-half comeback, fueled by the trio of Abigail Selfridge, Erica Selfridge, and Megan Palmatier, ensured that the Bobcats moved on to the finals, where they will try and avenge their loss to Watkins Glen on the biggest stage – a loss that happened just two short years ago.
Right out of the gates, Moravia were fired up and ready for the challenge that the undefeated Bobcats posed.
They put up 14 points in the opening quarter, while limiting B-G to just eight.
Grace Wasileski helped to furnish the massive beginning to the game for Moravia, as she hit seven of her 17 total points in the first quarter.
“I thought we were really tight. We just couldn’t really make a shot,” said B-G head coach Bob Conway following the game. “Defensively, we did okay. We gave up a couple of three’s that we probably shouldn’t have. We just looked a little overwhelmed.”
The Bobcats did a better job of containing the Moravia offense in the second quarter, but still found themselves in a seven-point hole at the interval – down 22-15.
“We came out in the third quarter and Abbi Selfridge had eight (points). That kind of got us going, it got us out of an offensive hole,” said coach Conway. “Then, Erica (Selfridge) hit a two, and we were down by six. Then, she hit a big three with four seconds left in the quarter to get it back to a one-point game. That kind of was the momentum swinger. That three woke us up.”
That crucial swing in momentum would carry over into the final eight minutes for B-G – as they then trailed Moravia 32-31 after the third period.
“(On the) first possession, Abbi Selfridge hit a low baseline jumper to put us up and then we just started playing extremely hard defensively,” said coach Conway. “As the quarter wore on, (Megan) Palmatier got to the foul line.”
Palmatier was lights out from the charity stripe down the stretch, hitting eight of ten free-throws in the final quarter, and nine out of 14 for the game.
Although only three-players got on the scoresheet for the lady Bobcats in the win, that’s all that they needed. Palmatier finished as the games highest scorer, netting 21 points, and she added 16 rebounds in her tremendous effort, while Abigail Selfridge finished with 20 points on the night, along with 15 rebounds.
In the other Section IV, Class C semifinal game, top-seeded Watkins Glen took down number four seeded Elmira Notre Dame comfortably, on a final score of 50-37.
That sets up a rematch of the 2014-2015 sectional final, where B-G fell to Watkins Glen. The Bobcats will be hoping for key players to step up once again, and that fortune will be shining on them when they venture back to Tompkins Cortland Community College, in Cortland, next Saturday, Mar. 4. Tip-off in the tantalizing match-up is scheduled for 3 p.m.
