BINGHAMTON – For the first time in six years the Norwich Purple Tornado were not the favorite to win the Section IV Class B title.
Despite being the number one seed in the sectional playoffs, Norwich remained off of the New York State Sports Writers list of ranked Class B Boys basketball teams. Upon viewing multiple polls on various social media outlets, the Tornado remained a staggered underdog.
That underdog tone faded as Norwich stormed the court in the second half continuing their Section IV dynastic cycle winning five of the last six Class B titles-claiming the 49-35 victory over the eighth-ranked Wolverines of Waverly – winners of their last 21 games.
On Friday March 3, the Tornado (18-6), struggled in the first quarter among the bright lights of the Veteran’s Memorial Arena allowing Waverly to take an early 11-7 lead.
The script soon flipped on Waverly as they suddenly began to reel backwards, as the Tornado defensive pressure increased. A steal by Norwich’s Ky’sawn Veale caught a break for the Tornado. Veale drove into the lane missing a tightly contested layup – only for trailing Tornado teammate Chris Jeffrey to corral one of his 20 rebounds in the game. With one hand and all in one motion Jeffrey flushed it down the iron, to tie the contest at 14 with 2:27 left to go in the second period.
Waverly refused to go quietly as a Gavin Judson three-ball pushed the Wolverines ahead 17-14 with under two minutes to play. Norwich cut the game to one point with a Dashawn King jumper with 1:29 left and a pair of Jeffrey free-throws allowed the Tornado to regain the lead 18-17 going into halftime.
“We’ve only been up maybe one time going into half” said Collier referencing Norwich’s half-time advantage during their previous four Section IV finals, “The fact that we were up and not playing well, was a very good thing, we just knew if we got stops (on defense) that our offense would come.”
The Tornado and the Wolverines uncharacteristically struggled offensively with both teams shooting well below 30 percent in the opening half. With the contest only within a one point gap, the team who answered the final bell first would most likely be moving on.
Recall the date of the game? March 3 or 3/3? Well, Norwich’s own number 33 – Chris Jeffrey answered the final bell putting on a dominating third quarter performance as he remained a thorn in the paws of the Wolverines – torching Waverly as he muscled his way to eight points in the quarter.
Not to mention Jeffrey’s overall 6’6” frame getting in the way of the Waverly offensive attack by cleaning up on the defensive glass – grabbing almost every straying Waverly shot all while preventing any inside Wolverine buckets.
In addition to his defensive prowess, Jeffrey’s offensive performance put a Waverly staple on defense – and sending Zach VanHouten to the bench with four personal fouls with just 3:52 left to play in the stanza.
Norwich only led 24-23 at the mark, with Jeffrey providing the only means of a Tornado offense to that point.
Jon Ward’s trifecta with 2:38 left in the third allowed Waverly to retake the lead 26-24, for the first time since the one minute mark of the second period.
Norwich’s sophomore guard Marcus Cashman would change that only seconds later, drilling a three-pointer off of a Jeffrey feed for Norwich to take the lead 27-26 with 1:48 left, ensuring that Waverly wouldn’t reclaim the lead again.
A Ky’sawn Veale drive for two, combined with a Jeffrey layup, and Veale’s buzzer-beating three-point bucket to end the third period put Norwich up 34-28 heading into the final quarter of play.
With the Wolverine’s concerned with the inside presence of Jeffrey, the Tornado guards in Tre Bonham, King and Michael Carson delivered the final blows.
The hustling and bustling Purple Tornado cleaned up the court, diving on the floor getting their white and purple jersey’s dirtied as they scrapped over the last eight minutes of the contest in the hopes of winning another Section IV crown.
Bonham’s three-pointer with 7:27 left in the fourth put NHS up 37-30, combined with back-to-back buckets by King – Norwich stretched the lead 41-32 with 4:23 left to play.
With the Tornado’s tenacious defense limiting and locking down on Waverly’s dynamic offense –which went for 73 points in their semifinal win over Seton Catholic only two days ago – the Wolverines look like a shell of their former self.
Waverly fought to score seven points over the final eight minutes.
“The biggest thing we did was contest shots” said Norwich head coach Brian Collier, “Our team defense was really good tonight.”
Bonham’s layup with 46.5 seconds left added by Carson’s put-back layup with 29.1 left topped off the game for Norwich, creating the final deficit 49-35 as the NHS bench erupted as the final buzzer-rang, signaling that Norwich had won its ninth sectional championship in 11 trips.
“It’s sweeter the second time around, especially being a senior this year” said Jeffrey of the Tornado winning the second of back-to-back Section IV Class B titles, “Nobody thought we could do it, Waverly was number eight in the state and we came out and showed them.”
“At the end of the day, we had a big advantage inside after everybody told us we had a little advantage. We told the guys, sometimes people don’t give you respect – you have to take it,” said coach Collier.
Chris Jeffrey led the Tornado with a game high 17 points, all while pulling down 20 rebounds on the night. Ky’sawn Veale scored nine points, recorded four steals, and dished out six assists in Norwich’s win. Waverly’s Hunter Bodine scored 13 points, Jon Ward scored 10 points with Ward and Zach VanHouten each grabbing eight rebounds. Waverly ends their season with a record of 22-2.
Norwich will play Section III’s Westhill, who beat Chittenango 67-41 for the Class B title in a State-Quarterfinal at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena on Saturday March 11. Game time is still to be determined and will be listed in a later edition of The Evening Sun.
