Tuesday night’s free entrepreneur workshop: ‘How to Find and Retain Great Employees’

OXFORD – A free entrepreneurial workshop titled “How to Find and Retain Great Employees” will be held on Tuesday, March 7 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Oxford Academy Primary School multi-purpose room.
The event will feature Brad Treat, Entrepreneur-in-Residence with the Southern Tier Startup Alliance, with Julia Miller of Blueox Energy Products & Services and Oxford Academy educator Mark Muller.
Treat – who has a long history as an entrepreneur and businessman and is currently acting as a teaching and mentoring entrepreneur for Southern Tier Startup Alliance – will provide staffing insight and recommendations based on his expertise. Treat will ask and answer questions such as, how do you identify and locate the employees that are best suited for your business, and how do you keep them?
Following Treat's portion of the presentation, the event will take a local turn. A new partnership is reportedly being launched between Oxford Academy and other area businesses in an effort to produce capable regional workers to meet the needs of regional businesses.
One of the first of said partnerships is Blueox, who is already involved in Oxford Academy's Work-Based Learning Program. Blueox Business Development Manager Julia Miller realized that going forward, Blueox could benefit from new employees who already are proficient in particular business doings such as Excel and other specific soft skills.
Consequently, Miller, in conjunction with administrators at Oxford Academy and science teacher Mark Muller, began working on a personalized career exploration and development program comprising a variety of career and college “Pathways” created jointly with experts in various fields.
The first of these “Pathways” includes a series of video training modules co-developed with Miller. Students who complete these modules will have acquired skills in Microsoft Office, customer service, financial literacy, soft skills, and business/enterprise. Benefits to Miller and Blueox will include an expanded number of trained employee candidates if those students choose to apply to Blueox, and a series of training modules she can use with any incoming employee.
Julia Miller studied marketing and management at Siena College, and worked at Radio Disney and Lang Media before coming to Blueox. She began as a Business Process Analyst and is now Business Development Manager working in sales and marketing for home delivery and service, and technology implementation for delivery, service, and the convenience store side of Blueox business.
Mark Muller studied at the University of New Mexico and worked in the field of biochemistry and molecular biology before becoming an educator. He has been teaching science at Oxford Academy for 12 years, advising, and teaching college-level courses through distance-learning.
Brad Treat is a serial entrepreneur and was founding CEO of Mezmeriz, Inc., where he raised over $4 million in venture capital from six upstate venture capital funds and angel groups. He also co-founded SightSpeed, Inc., and served as its CEO before it was sold to Logitech. Treat also served as Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Cornell University and now teaches practical entrepreneurship at Ithaca College. He has over fifteen years of operational, financial, and business strategy experience at both startups and large corporations.
This is another presentation in the two-year Innovation Series of free monthly events held locally for entrepreneurs and those thinking about entrepreneurship in greater Chenango County. This event complements earlier workshops, but previous attendance is not required. All are welcome, including both students and adults.
The Innovation Series is a product of IC2 partnerships: individuals from local business, public education, higher education, and municipalities who through the Innovative Community Collaborative of Greater Chenango County, support expanding connections and new venture development.
This event will also be live-streamed free through the following link: www.ensemble.dcmoboces.com/Watch/x6H3Zez4
Event preregistration online at www.dcmoventures.webs.com/ic2 is invited but not required.
The next workshop will be held Tuesday, April 4, 2017: “Customer Discovery Tactics.” For more information, call (607) 843-2025, ext. 3301.
