BAINBRIDGE – The star seniors from both the Broome and Chenango MAC League teams combined forces to take on those from the Delaware and Otsego teams last night, March 7, in Bainbridge.
Delaware/Otsego got the better of the Broome/Chenango side on the night, on a final score of 83-73.
Of the 12 players on the Broome/Chenango side, nine represented a Chenango County school. Those were: Mike Graven-Briggs, of Afton; Sean Jones and Zach Ouimet, of Bainbridge-Guilford; Will Williams, Brevan Gilmore and Luke Erickson, from Greene; Austin Crawford and Stephen Ehly, of Oxford and Mason Mikalunas, who represented Unadilla Valley. The other three players on the team, Dan Villano, Dylan Koranka and Colby Hendrickson all represented Harpursville. Oxford’s Tim Davis, and Greene’s Chris Rice coached the team.
On the Delaware/Otsego side, Sidney was the largest contributor, sending five representatives. They included: Alex Hoskins, Kyle Smith, Trevor Dutton, Collin Karl and Dawson Backus. The rest of the team was comprised of players from Delhi, Deposit, Hancock, Unatego and Walton. They included: Ben Branigan and Max Hurlburt, of Delhi; Paul Anderson and Gavin Santamaria, of Deposit; Lane Bass, from Hancock; Jared Youngs and Zachary Youngs, from Unatego and Jared Webler, the sole representative from Walton. Deposit’s Ben Diemer was in charge of the Delaware/Otsego side.
Delaware/Otsego got off to a hot start, and jumped out to a quick 21-8 lead after the opening quarter. However, the Broome/Chenango team found its feet on offense in the second quarter, managing to score 25 points. That didn’t allow them to cut into the deficit too much, as their defense was still struggling to contain the potent Delaware/Otsego offense, and allowed 22 points. Delaware/Otsego took a 10-point lead into the interval, up 43-33.
The Broome/Chenango team cut the lead to just four after the third quarter, outscoring Delaware/Otsego 20-14, but they ultimately could not maintain that staunch defense, and succumbed to the defeat.
Deposit’s Paul Anderson finished as the game’s highest scorer, nailing an impressive seven three-pointers on his way to 24 total points. Delhi’s Ben Branigan netted 16 in the win, while Sidney’s Dawson Backus finished with 15 points on the night.
On the Broome/Chenango side, Oxford Blackhawks star Austin Crawford finished as the team’s top scorer, with 18 points. Sean Jones shined on his home court, notching 15 points, while Harpursville’s Dan Villano added nine in his team’s loss.
