BAINBRIDGE – Marking the end of the Midstate Athletic Conference basketball season, the annual Senior Classic was held on Tuesday night, March 7, to recognize the years of hard work all of the athletes have given to their respective programs over the years – as well as having a fun all-star game type atmosphere with the teams of Broome/Chenango counties assembling the Western squad and Delaware/Otsego county squads assembled an impressive Eastern bloc.
Bainbridge-Guilford coach Bob Conway led the West and Harpursville coach Kurt Ehrensbeck led the East. The competition was all in good fun however, as the West broke down the East’s offensive wall, when Kayla Spangenberg of Delhi scored 20 points on the night, as the West came away with the 60-55 win.
The tightly contested first half of the contest provided a high powered offensive effort from Spangenberg who led all scorers with nine points at the half, as both teams remained deadlocked at 26 entering halftime.
For the West, it was the offensive performance from Deposit’s Amber Whitehead pacing them with six points entering the break.
The second half was the most exciting part of the game as the conglomeration of senior athletes played out their last minutes of high school hoops in a tightly contested matchup, which of course was strictly for bragging rights.
Spangenberg’s 11 second-half points, aided by her East teammate Alexis Houghton – from Hancock – who hit six of her 10 markers in the game in the second frame of play.
The West kept pace as B-G’s Becca Reyes paced the team with nine of her 14 points on the night in the second half, while teammate Carolee Pierce of Sidney added in six of her 10 points in the half.
Both coaches Conway and Ehrensbeck got the most of their all-star rosters with all players adding in defensive efforts that don’t unfortunately make the box score.
Spangenberg led scorers with a game high 20 points for the East with Alexis Houghton scoring 10 of her own. Becca Reyes led the West in scoring with 14 points and Carolee Pierce added 10 markers of her own in the victory.
