Youth group strives to build community bonding through summer work camp
SOUTH NEW BERLIN– On March 23, former members of the First Baptist Church of South New Berlin’s youth group, along with Pastor Barry Davis – 1st Baptist Church Burlington Green – and youth group leaders Cathy Smith and Fawn Dix, will be bringing Reach Missions Camp to Chenango County. All are invited to attend this community building event.
Each summer, beginning in 2009 until 2013, the group attended one week of work camp with Reach Ministries International.
Reach Ministries International is head quartered in Galeton, CO. Reach is an inter-denominational organization whose mission is to assist elderly, disabled, and low income homeowners with basic repairs to their homes, making them safer and more accessible. There is no cost to the homeowner.
Youth Groups from all over the country pack up their tools and caravan to places like Niagara Falls, NY and New Oxford, PA.
Once there, the groups join approximately five hundred staff, leaders, and youth in building relationships and repairing homes. At night the campers settle in at a local high school for worship, music, and games. In the evening after dinner each participant writes a positive note to the people in their groups. The notes are placed in envelopes and given out at the end of the week. The days are full of building, painting, and repairing homes. The work embraces spending quality time with the family, in their home.
“Miracle Friday” is when all the teams join together to complete the service projects. The Reach program ends with energy, accomplishment, and love.
Smith’s experience with the program inspired her to bring the work camp to Chenango County. First, Smith contacted Mike Jones at Reach to explore the planning process. Then, the activity of obtaining the Unadilla Valley Central School, as a camp, began.
Once Reach and the school signed a contract the fund raising started. Reach recommends the host community provide $7,500 – through payment or goods – per week for the camp to function. Currently, Smith and the board members have raised approximately $5000. The next step is to locate families who are willing to allow Reach campers to work on their homes.
The contract for the community is for July 8, through July 14, and from July 15, through July 21, 2018.
During the two weeks, improvements will be made to approximately 100-120 homes. There is a need in Chenango County for this mission and a large number of people to fund it. The team is asking for your help.
