OXFORD – The Oxford Winterguard secured a second consecutive gold medal – this time in the Scholastic A-3 Class following the Mid-York Colorguard Championships, which were held on Saturday, April 1, at Shenendehowa High School in Albany.

Following their great success in 2016, the Blackhawks were moved up a division this year, and took on new competition in the form of Batavia, Central Square, Norwich, Phoenix, and Sherburne-Earlville.

“We’re hoping for gold again this year,” said Renae Ruff, head coach of the Oxford Winterguard in an interview with The Evening Sun prior to the start of the 2016-2017 season.

And despite this new challenge of moving up a class, Oxford was able to complete their gold, as they were recently crowned champions.

Along with their gold medal in the Scholastic A-3 Class, The Oxford Academy Winterguard also won the Robert Morse Memorial Award. Notably, Bob Morse was a member of the New York Federation of Contest Judges for over three decades.

“It was Bob’s passion to recognize groups that showed progress and growth with pride in their own improvements,” read a press release on Oxford Winterguard.
