HERKIMER – College athletics can be the most demanding and yet most rewarding part of someone’s college experience.
Managing practices, games, school work and a social life all create a balancing act that can sometimes feel more like juggling rather than balancing.
In terms of athletics, playing time is never promised, and sometimes the learning curve of being a freshman in an established program can be intimidating. Often times, student-athletes need to build themselves up over the course of their career before they can play a major role on their respective team.
In the case of Norwich High School class of 2016 alumni Shannon Moore, she’s been game ready since the day she showed up for classes this past fall, and perhaps even longer than that.
Having started playing softball 11 years ago, the Herkimer freshman has used all she has learned as a student of the game to provide continuous success to her Herkimer Generals softball team. With a batting average formerly ranked first in the nation (.627) but currently ranked at seventh in the nation among all NJCAA Division III softball players with a .576.
Moore has been on a tear so far this season as she has recorded 38 hits on the year – 16 of which have been for extra bases; 10 doubles, five triples and one round tripper.
As a very patient hitter, Moore has provided the most impressive stat of all, in her 66 at bats this season, she has only struck out once. Not only has Moore been racking at the dish, she’s been driving in run after run, recording 28 RBI’s on the year. Having only played in 20 games this year for the Generals, Shannon is far ahead the average freshman in terms of playing time and overall poise at the plate.
Shannon associates her team’s success and her own individual success to the coaching staff at Herkimer.
“The coaches here really preach on becoming a better teammate and a better person and your skills will fall into place. We focus on character which drives the process which drives the results,” said Moore.
Based upon the old coaching principle of success building success, it’s no surprise that Moore’s results are a part of a much bigger focus – winning. With her Generals team sitting pretty on a 21-5 record with 10-0 record in their league, the sky is the limit for Herkimer.
Ask Shannon what the goal is come postseason play? Easy, a national championship.
“I truly believe that our team will make the playoffs. Herkimer softball won the national championship in 2013, and has come in second place the past three years. We are looking to break that and win another National Championship this year,” said Moore of the season goals. “Herkimer is amazing. I couldn’t picture myself anywhere else, this is truly the best place in the world. I never wanted to go to a two year school, or follow in my sister’s footsteps (Molly Moore), but honestly I couldn’t picture myself anywhere else.”
Looks like Shannon hit the jackpot, as her Herkimer Generals squad continues their dominating performance across the NJCAA – seeking that elusive National Championship that they have desperately coveted. The Generals are currently on a 12 game win streak, and will carry that streak into the Generals’ double-header against Genesee Community College on April 22.
