NHS boys and girls track take first at Doug Quinney Invite

SIDNEY – The Norwich boys and girls track and field team took center stage as both teams swept away their competition on their way to the overall team first place victory at the 2017 Quinney Invitational.
The Tornado boys accumulated 148 points on the day creating a deficit of 50 points between the second place team Sidney.
For the Tornado women, the results would be very similar as they recorded 126 points on the afternoon, 49 more points than the second place Oneonta Yellowjackets.
The Norwich boys saw their first victory of the day come in steeplechase as Ben Ericksen outpaced the field to a speedy time of 10:20 minutes.
Ky’sawn Veale earned another NHS win timing 17.07 seconds in the 110m hurdles.
NHS achieved another win in the 4x800 meter relay, timing 8:50 minutes.
Norwich’s Zack Race and Eric Conant would finish first and second in the 100m dash with times of 11.19 and 11.47 respectively. Race’s time in the 100 meter dash would set a new Quinney Invite record for the event.
Scott Tomanocy recorded a time of 54.74 for second place in the 400m run – while Ben Ericksen claimed another dub for the NHS squad timing 4:52.75 in the 1600 meter.
Gabe Gawronski won the 800 meter run, timing 2:10.14.
Tornado sprinters Zack Race and Eric Conant once again split in the 200 meter dash, with Race timing 22.46 and Conant crossing the tape with a time of 23.88.
The 4x100 meter relay team of David Berger, Race, Conant and Veale sprinted to the win in the event with a time of 46.08 seconds. NHS would claim another win in the 4x400m relay with Noah Bufalini, Gawronski, Tomanocy and Connor Nial pacing the Purple Tornado with a winning time of 3:51.74.
Veale claimed a win in the triple jump with a leap of 38’04.25 feet to conclude Norwich’s scoring in the field events.
NHS’s Zack Race would claim the Quinney Invitational Outstanding Boys Track Performance as the MVP of the meet.
For the Norwich women, they claimed their first win of the day in the 4x800m relay with the team of Nicole Jeffrey, Hailey Colabelli, Katie Gawronski and Meghan Komendarek crossing the tape in a time of 10:31.46.
The Tornado women accumulated a series of second place finishes with Emily Shattuck in the 100m sprint with a time of 13.36, Nicole Jeffrey placed second in the 1500m with a time of 5:14.51.
In the 400m hurdles, Katie Gawronski finished second with a time of 1:15. Norwich claimed another win in the 800m run as Norwich’s Jeffrey crossed the finish line in a time of 2:32 with teammate Komendarek placing second with a time of 2:36.53.
The Tornado harriers weren’t done yet, as they claimed a victory in the 4x100m relay as Hailey Colabelli, Shattuck, Caroline Stewart and Delilah Geislinger hustled to a time of 53.53 seconds. The 4x400m relay team of Gawronski, Colabelli, Geislinger and Komendarek claimed first place with a time of 4:33.21.
Caroline Stewart placed second in the long jump with a leap of 16’10.5 feet, with Lizzy Eddy placing second in the Pole Vault, vaulting a height of 6’06.01 feet, and Kara Evans threw 97’04 feet for first place in discus to conclude the top scoring for the Norwich girls.
For other Chenango County athletes who participated on the boy’s side, Ben Avolio of Unadilla Valley won the 400 meter dash in a time of 54.33 seconds. Avolio’s teammate Than Garry ran a 1:01.93 in the 400 meter hurdles. Sherburne-Earlville’s Lincoln Owen won the long jump event with an amazing leap of 20’06.50 feet and in turn breaking the long jump record for the meet – also turning in a solid showing in the 100m dash, running an 11.61.
For the girls, Greene’s Madison Rice placed second in the 400m dash running a time of 1:04.87 and Unadilla Valley’s Julia Oglesby placed second in the high jump clearing a height of 4’08 feet.
Norwich varsity track and field returns to their own home track on Tuesday, April 25, for a home meet against the Oneonta Yellowjackets at 4:15 p.m.
Sherburne-Earlville will host Westmoreland at 4:30 p.m. On Tuesday, April 25. While Unadilla Valley will host a home meet on Wednesday, April 26, at 4:40 p.m. where Greene, Bainbridge-Guilford, and Afton will all be present.
