Norwich continues dominance in Track and Field

NORWICH – It is safe to say that the 2017 Norwich boys and girls varsity track and field team is quite good.
After dominating most of the MAC League at the Quinney Invitational this past Saturday, April 22, in Sidney – Norwich wasted no time in returning to competition form when they hosted a three-way meet with Oneonta and Chenango Forks, Tuesday, April 25.
“We had a lot of great performances which obviously helped us with the wins,” said Norwich head coach Shaun Horan. “Overall, the Norwich athletes were very positive. Our athletes were incredible when it came to cheering on teammates, the 4x400 was by far the loudest event of the night.”
Norwich rolled over the Yellowjackets and Blue Devils handing them team losses for the boys of 81-60 and 83-58, respectively – while the Tornado girls defeated Oneonta and Chenango Forks 86-55, and 117-22, respectively.
It might officially be safe to say, that junior Zack Race is the fastest sprinter to ever step on a Norwich track.
Zack Race tied the hand-timed school record in the 100 meter dash, and broke the facility record with his 10.8 second race on Tuesday. Race took home an obvious first home finish, while Norwich’s Eric Conant and David Berger rounded out a solid sweep of the event.
“The old facility record was actually a tie between Barry Benjamin and a few other fast guys from different schools,” said coach Horan of Zack’s record-breaking day.
Barry Benjamin of Norwich (1983), Droomgoole of Chenango Valley (1983), and Austin Flowers of Ithaca (1988) all previously held the facility record at 10.9 seconds in the 100m dash, hand-timed.
En route to a stellar performance on the track, Race also smashed his own NHS school record in the 200 meter dash – posting his fastest hand timed race of 21.9 seconds for a first place finish, and downing the facility record as well, which was previously held since 1988, by Austin Flowers of Ithaca at 22.5 seconds.
Horan elected to point out five personal best performances from his squad of athletes – among many other fantastic outings.
• Ky’sawn Veale, PR time in the 110 hurdles with a time 16.8 seconds and a near PR in triple jump.
• David Berger, tied his PR height in pole vault at 9’6”
• Zack Clipston, PR jump in high jump at 5’6”
• Caroline Stewart, had a seasons best jump in triple jump at 35’3.75”
• Emily Shattuck, had a seasons best 200m dash time at 27.9 seconds
