Norwich Tennis defeats Oneonta 6-1 on Wednesday and Johnson City 7-0 on Monday
NORWICH – The Norwich Purple Tornado varsity tennis squad have worked hard at turning their season around, moving from a once dismal 1-3 start to a now impressive 5-3 record – holding a four match win-streak.
Two matches played so far during this week of school, Norwich extended their streak to four when they showed some dominance on the courts with a 6-1 win over Oneonta, and a 7-0 shutout win over Johnson City.
“Norwich swept six points in straight sets with solid play in doubles and singles,” said Norwich head coach John Stewart with regard to the Oneonta match. “Taking the fourth point of the match was first doubles team of Carson (Maynard) and Austin (Benenati).”
Norwich’s success of late hasn’t just been success, it has been a team assembled into a perfect storm as coach Stewart has moved some pieces to attempt to put the Tornado players in the best situation possible.
The match-point, deciding the win came when Norwich’s Austin Benenati and Carson Maynard defeated Abigail Thorsland and Reece Thorsland in straight sets at 6-0 and 6-3.
Fellow Norwich doubles teams Jahlil Jones and Zac Marsh at second doubles took a win for the Tornado, downing Amanda Slater and Hailee Harby at 6-1 and 6-0. Third doubles for Norwich, completed the doubles sweep when Nathan Christopherson and Dakota Hall defeated Emma Knudsen and Alyssa Bredin at 6-1 and 6-2.
Second, third and fourth singles each snagged a win in the rout with Joel Fazio defeating Alex Mannion at 6-0 and 6-2, Zayn Harper besting Liz Knudsen at 6-0 and 6-0, and Matt Giglio defeating Julianna Pidgeon at 6-1 and 6-0, respectively.
Norwich’s lone loss to Oneonta came at the top spot, as Chris Catan bested Josiah Shaver in straight sets at 6-0 and 6-1.
Prior to the 6-1 win over Oneonta, Norwich impressively enjoyed even more success with a shutout 7-0 win over Johnson City, on the road.
A true rout of the Wildcats, Norwich defeated JC 85-18 in games played on Monday, April 24.
“Clearly a rout in which we did not give up a set,” said coach John Stewart. “I liked our focus tonight against a weaker team.”
Norwich swept the Wildcats from the courts – taking four singles wins, starting with Josiah Shaver downing Thomas Corey at 6-2 and 7-5 at first singles. Second singles saw Joel Fazio snag a near perfect win over Alex Hammer at 6-1 and 6-0. Third singles, Zayne Harper defeated Mikhael Boychuck at 6-0 and 6-2 – all before Matt Giglio capped off the singles with a 6-0 and 6-1 win over Musab Azam.
The doubles teams for the Tornado might have been even more dominant, as top doubles duo Austin Benenati and Carson Maynard snagged a solid 6-2 and 6-2 win over Nate Hacker and Mustafa Ahmad.
Zac Marsh and Jahlil Jones earned yet another straight set win when they defeated Coby Breeze and Martin Montano at second doubles, by a score of 6-1 and 6-3. Third doubles finished out the shutout on the road, as Dakota Hall and Nathan Christopherson earned forfeits.
Norwich varsity tennis (5-3 overall) will be on the road for their next two matches. Norwich takes on division leader Chenango Forks on Monday, May 1, when they travel to Forks for a 4:15 p.m. Start.
Oxford Tennis splits, defeats Hancock 5-0 – falls to Windsor 3-2
OXFORD – Oxford now sits at a solid second place in the MAC league – holding a 2-2 overall record, after splitting matches thus far this past week.
On Monday, April 24, Oxford hosted the Black Knights of Windsor in an non-league matchup which wouldn’t fall their way, as Windsor prevailed 3-2 on the day.
The decision in the Windsor matchup was simple – Windsor snagged all of the single matches while Oxford grabbed both of the doubles.
At first singles, Zach Burpee defeated Oxford’s top singles player – Alyssa Hadges – by a landslide at 6-1 and 6-0. Second singles wouldn’t fair any better, as Hunter Moran of Windsor downed Natalie Barrows at 6-1 and 6-0. Third singles saw the Black Knights send out Alejandro Chavarria who defeated Destiny Bedell at 6-0 and 6-0.
Oxford’s Jason Davis and Rece Camadine looked to reverse some fortune in the Blackhawks home match with a strait sent win at first double – defeating Ty Crea and Jordan Collett in a close matchup at 6-4 and 6-3.
Gavin Wheatley and Harry Oliver of Oxford followed the lead, adding a second team point in the ultimate loss – when the pair used three sets to defeat Nate Schmidt and Reid Schmidt at 6-1, and 6-7(6-8).
The home loss at 3-2 on Monday, didn’t sit well with the Blackhawks, who regrouped and hosted Hancock on Wednesday, April 26, a match where they dominated to the tune of a 5-0 win.
Straight sets across the board – Oxford swept the competition in the singles and doubles categories, needing no extra sets to do so.
At the top singles spot, Oxford’s Harry Oliver earned a 6-1 and 7-5 win over Bailey VanLoan. Gavin Wheatley of Oxford would down Porter Crawson at 7-5 and 6-0, at second singles. Destiny Bedell again played third singles for the Blackhawks, a spot where she earned a win over Kayla Rumolo at 6-4 and 6-1.
First doubles duo of Jason Davis and Rece Camadine blanked Michael Argiros and Tiffany Poborsky at 6-0 and 6-0 – all before Natalie Barrows and Jourdan Pinney snagged a nifty 6-0 and 6-3 win over Zack Goernt and Ryan Callan at second doubles.
Oxford (2-2 overall) will be playing once again this week, when they travel to Greene on Thursday, April 27, at 4:15 p.m.
Sidney Tennis defeats Bainbridge-Guilford 5-0 on Tuesday
BAINBRIDGE – The Sidney Warriors have climbed the ranks to sit atop the MAC League with an overall record 4-1 – 3-1 following their win on Tuesday, April 25, over Bainbridge-Guilford.
5-0, Sidney swept the Bobcats in a mismatch of talent, as only the top singles and doubles teams would steal a point in the matchup.
At first singles Riley MacPherson defeated Bailey Hotaling at 6-1 and 6-0. Second and third doubles for Sidney defeated B-G at 6-0 and 6-0 – as Micha Bowie defeated Owen Lambrecht and Trenton Stillman earned the win over Amaya Carlin, respectively.
Sean Germond and Trevor Dutton would be locked into the closest matchup of the night at second doubles, when they were matched with the likes of Jared Pruskowski and Dadeon Canfield of B-G. The Warriors would steal the point to continue the sweep, at 6-4 and 6-1. Lucas Tanner and Dillon Hendrickson of Sidney would continue the domination of the Bobcats with a 6-0 and 6-0 win at second doubles, over Tannar Cliffe and Nate Oliver.
Bainbridge-Guilford (1-2 overall) will be home against Greene on Friday, April 28, at 4:!5 p.m.
Sidney Tennis defeats Greene 5-0 on Wednesday
SIDNEY – Solidifying their place at the top of the MAC league, the Sidney Warriors tennis team took a 5-0 victory over Greene on Wednesday, April 26.
For the second time in as many days it was all straight sets for Sidney – who were faced with a slightly more competent Greene roster.
Top singles player, Riley MacPherson slid to a shut out 6-0 and 6-0 win over Zach Westover. Second singles saw Micha Bowie take the win over Greene’s Isaac Trass at 6-1 and 6-0. Trenton Stillman held down the final singles spot, a spot he defended to a win at 6-0 and 6-1 over the Trojans Kevin Gyurik.
Sidney’s top doubles duo of Sean Germond and Trevor Dutton scrambled to a solid 6-2 and 6-0 win over Greene’s Mary Borchardt and Sophia Brown. Dropping the second doubles spot, Kelly Darling and Garrett Anders of Greene would fall to Lucas Tanner and Dillon Hendrickson at 6-0 and 6-0.
Greene (0-2 overall) will be busy the remainder of the week – playing home against Oxford on Thursday, April 27, before taking to the road on Friday, April 28, to play Bainbridge-Guilford. Both games on Thursday and Friday are set to begin at 4:15 p.m.
