ONEONTA – The Oneonta Yellowjackets came to town on Monday, and stung the Purple Tornado softball team by a score of 7-4.
“We played great,” said Norwich head coach Jim Sanford.
Sanford remained optimistic despite the loss due to the fight he saw in his athletes – a fight that earned the lady Tornado eight hits in the loss. Better yet, this mark of eight hits doubled the production at the plate that the Yellowjackets enjoyed, only snagging four in the win.
The downside to the hits, came by way of the final score, and subsequently another Norwich loss. The game started with a 3-3 tied ball game after the first inning. Norwich powered their way to a nice 3-0 lead before allowing the lady Yellowjackets to slide in three as well.
Leading the Norwich batters on the day was Morgan Conkling and Kate Dowdall. Conkling and Dowdall each finished 2-4 in the game with a double a piece – with Dowdall recording a run and Conkling snagging an RBI. Allison Yacano smashed home two RBI in her losing efforts, going 1-4. Airelle Jacquette finished 1-4 with a run.
Taking the loss on the mound for Norwich was Olivia Granquist. Granquist pitched all six innings recording six strikeouts and four walks – allowing just four hits to the opportunistic Yellowjackets.
Michelle Rossi would be credited with the win for Oneonta, pitching seven innings but allowing one walk to her three strikeouts.
Norwich dropped their overall record to 0-11 following this loss.

NORWICH – Norwich softball found themselves in yet another solid game when they hosted Owego on Wednesday, May 3, however, once again the outcome would not fall toward the Tornado as they lost 8-4 in eight innings.
With an explosion of runs for Norwich in the third inning, the lady Tornado found themselves in unfamiliar territory – up in game at 4-2. Owego would blank Norwich the remainder of the game, hunting them down. Up 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning Norwich’s hopes of a win on the 2017 season nearly materialized.
The lady Indians drove in a run to send the game to overtime – Norwich would have to wait for their elusive win.
Norwich was blanked in the top of the eighth inning, and that is when it all fell apart. Owego drove in four runners in the bottom of the eighth to finally take their first lead, and with it the 8-4 win.
10 hits and the bats were blazing for the Norwich lady Tornado in their home loss, Parker Walsh, Airelle Jacquette and Sam Gage each finished with solid outings at the plate going 2-4.
Morgan Conkling, Kate Dowdall, Ava Granquist and Triniti Myers each recorded a hit in the loss – with runs coming from Walsh and Dowdall.
Norwich pitcher Alex Colley took the loss on the mound, pitching eight innings, striking out six Owego batters and walking two. Taking the win for Owego was Chelsea Sellars. Sellars pitched all eight innings as well, with eight strikeouts and four walks in the process.
Next up for Norwich (0-12 overall), they are scheduled to play home against Johnson City on Friday, May 5, at 4:30 p.m.
