New Traffic Diversion Program comes to Chenango County
CHENANGO COUNTY – Chenango County District Attorney Joseph A. McBride recently announced the creation of the Traffic Diversion Program, which has the potential to assist many motorists.
At the head of the program is retired Norwich Police Sergeant Gard Turner. Turner will work as coordinator.
McBride described the program. “The program is designed to assist motorists with certain non-serious vehicle and traffic offenses by allowing them to participate in a traffic safety course approved by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, in lieu of a conviction of the traffic offense,” he said.
Said Turner, “Upon successful completion of this traffic safety course, the motorists’s traffic ticket(s) will be dismissed. There will be no fine or surcharge and there will be no record of conviction on the motorist’s driving record.
Upon acceptance into the program, a motorist will be given 30 days to complete a six hour traffic safety course and forward their ‘Certificate of Completion’ to the District Attorney’s Office.
There will be a non-refundable fee for admittance into the Traffic Diversion Program. The fees are kept locally – shared between the Chenango County and the township in which the ticket is written.
“Not all traffic offenses are eligible to be dismissed under this program,” said Turner. “Any misdemeanor offense, leaving the scene of a property damage accident or leading the scene of a personal injury offense are not eligible.” Additionally, passing a school bus, texting while driving, reckless driving, and driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol are not permitted to be included in the program.
A complete list of rules and regulations, and how to enroll can be found on the Chenango County website at www.co.chenango.ny.us under the District Attorney section.
Anyone with questions about the program can call the DA’s office at 337-1745 or email districtattorney@co.chenango.ny.us
