Trevisani hits walk-off single to lift Norwich to 5-4 win
NORWICH – Down 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Norwich Purple Tornado baseball team was looking at another potential loss on Monday night against Chenango Valley.
“It was fun and it was exciting. We got on them early and then they chipped away, but we held on,” said Norwich head coach Rich Turnbull. “They scored in the seventh and took the lead. This is the second year in a row we have had a walk-off against them (Chenango Valley).”
After walking both Marcus Cashman and JT Vinal, the duo would advance a base after some solid base-running and awareness.
“They got a got on walk, advanced on a fielders choice. Then hit an RBI single to center field to score,” said coach Turnbull of the CV score to take the lead late in the seventh. “First two guys got walked, that was Marcus on first and JT on second. Then next thing we know there was a ball in the dirt, the catcher thought it got by him but it was right below him. JT had an unbelievable read on the play and JT advanced to third. It was a great play by JT. It was heads up base running.”
With JT on third base and Marcus Cashman close behind, on second base – CV’s pitcher, Pat Giblin decided it was time to walk Nate Scheer who was in the midst of a solid day at the plate going 3-3 with an earlier RBI. Up to the plate stepped Norwich’s Mike Trevisani.
Trevisani smashed a single to right field – a move that opened the gates for a Norwich walk-off win. Turnbull saw the win in their grasp and decided to send Vinal and Cashman home – both would score to give Norwich the 5-4 win.
“We played real good tonight, we had 10 hits. We made a few errors but we made some really good plays in the field,” said coach Turnbull. We turned three double-plays tonight.”
Earning the win on the mound was none other than Trevisani, who pitched the entire seven innings for 83 pitches, one strikeout and three walks.
Mike Trevisani had a great game, pitched to contact. We made plays behind him,” said coach Turnbull.
Norwich ripped off double-plays in the first, second and seventh innings. As they marched to a solid 3-0 lead after two innings – before the Warriors found their footing in the game.
“We Made an error (first inning), and instead of hanging our heads, we made a beautiful double-play. Nate Scheer grounded it and scooped it with his glove to Marcus (Cashman),” said coach Turnbull of the solid defensive performance. “It was like something you see on TV, we had fire today and we are having fun.”
Finishing the day on a high note with the walk-off single, Trevisani ended up going 3-4 at the plate with two RBI. Adding a hit a piece was Norwich’s Eli Rodriguez, JT Vinal, Marcus Cashman, and AJ Little – with Vinal scoring twice, Little scoring once, and Cashman snagging two runs and an RBI.
Next up for Norwich, they will be home against Chenango Forks on Tuesday, May 9, at 4:30 p.m. Notably, Norwich will hold their senior night celebrations on Thursday, May 11, at 5 p.m., when they host Johnson City.
