NEW BERLIN – The lady Storm of Unadilla Valley played their final varsity softball game of the 2017 season, and what better way to finish out the year, than a 10-5 win at home over the Delhi Bulldogs.
Prior to the start of the game, Unadilla Valley celebrated their six graduating seniors: Abbie Oglesby, Tessa Huffine, Alysa Mumbulo, Megan Winton, Sara Nogaret, and Tia Peck.
What happened next was simply a team that had gelled, a team that wanted to win, and a team that finished off their 2017 campaign on top.
Knocking in four runs in just the first inning, the UV bats were on fire throughout the contest. The lady Storm racked up their 10 runs off of 13 hits – while the defensive effort was solid, committing only one error to Delhi’s three.
“We played very well tonight both offensively and defensively. We got the bats going early, which helped build our confidence early in the game,” said Unadilla Valley head coach Hannah Johnson.
Taking the win on the mound was senior Tia Peck. Peck pitched the entire seven innings of the game, striking out seven Bulldog batters and walking six.
Opposite Peck, was Delhi’s pitcher Mikaela Silcox, who struggled throughout the game with the UV bats. Silcox struck out no batters in the loss, while walking five.
The game would remain close, with a 5-3 score, following the second inning. With a quiet third inning, UV used the time to load up their bats to drive in two additional runs in the fourth – in what would be the decisive moment, as Delhi would only add two more runs in the fifth before sputtering out on offense.
The big hitters on the night for the UV girls, were Kirsten White at 3-4, Megan Winton at 2-4, and Mckenzie Knapp at 2-2.
Kirsten White managed a double in her efforts, with Tia Peck earning a triple. Kirsten White snagged three RBI, followed by Megan Winton with two, Gabby Bodie with two – while Peck and Sara Nogaret added one a piece.
With the home win, Unadilla Valley softball concludes their 2017 spring season with an overall record of 2-12.
