GREENE – The tensions were high right from the get-go, as Greene baseball hosted the Oxford Blackhawks – squeezing out a win at 4-3 for the Trojans.
The very first inning saw the Blackhawks turn a triple play to get themselves out a jam in the inning, holding onto the 0-0 tie after one.
“It was a very good high school baseball game. We had a chance at the end,” said Oxford head coach Chris Palmer.
Greene took full advantage of a fourth inning in which the Blackhawks hit a lapse in discipline, committing three of their four errors. Couple those errors with four hits from Greene and seven base runners equaled a four-run inning for the Trojans.
“They helped us out there,” said Greene head coach Ron Rapp.
Down 4-0 and looking up at the Trojans, Oxford managed to flip the script on Greene, using mistakes on the Trojans side, coupled with a hit to send three runners in for a 4-3 seventh inning game.
“We squeaked it out in the seventh. Tying run on third, and winning run on second. It wasn’t tight until we walked the bases loaded, then it got real interesting,” said coach Rapp.
Nick Robb of Oxford knocked a single on a fly ball to left field reaching first base. Due to pitching, Connor Lawton was walked, followed by Jon Heggie. A fielders choice situation with Austin Crawford, allowed Robb to make it home for the run, advancing Lawton to third and Heggie to second.
Greene elected to walk the electrifying Dylan Depew – loading the bases once again.
Oxford’s Brad Beckwith was hoping to pull out the miraculous win when he smashed a ground ball – reaching the base on an error and allowing two runs to come home.
With Depew on third base, and Beckwith now on second. Nick Cirello was thrown out at first, due to a dropped third strike. Phil Smith would knock a fly ball, suffering the final out of the inning, as Logan Kennedy of Greene made the saving play for the Trojans.
“We hit well tonight, we being hard outs right now. Put the ball in play and make the other team make plays,” said coach Rapp of his team having 11 hits.
Leading Greene at the plate was Alec Frair at 3-3, Brandyn Scott at 2-3 and Matt Bergholtz at 2-3 with a run and an RBI.
Oxford recorded just four hits, by way of Jon Heggie, Austin Crawford, Phil Smith and Noah Robb – Crawford added an RBI, with Brad Beckwith going 0-3 with two RBI.
Greene saw their pitcher, Nick Shoemaker take the win for the Trojans – tossing six strikeouts and four walks. Noah Kennedy would come in for one inning, tossing one strikeout and one walk.
Oxford’s Dylan Depew was credited with the loss, having five strikeouts and no walks – however, allowing 11 hits.
