Sherburne-Earlville Softball defeats Unatego 5-3 on Friday (senior night)
SHERBURNE – Staring down a potential 1-11 overall record, senior night would bring out the best of the Sherburne-Earlville lady Marauders, as they hosted Unatego – earning the win at 5-3.
Prior to the start of the game, Sherburne-Earlville honored their five graduating seniors: Alexis Kane, Sara Genter, Miranda Wright, Lizzy Bachman, and Mattison Gunther.
The Marauders got the bats going early against the lady Spartans – ripping off back-to-back innings with multiple hits to begin the game. The result, a run in both the first and second inning, as the lady Marauders led Unatego 2-1 after two.
S-E would secure at least a hit in four out of the six of the innings they saw the plate – proving to be the difference in the game, as Unatego wouldn’t record a hit until the fourth inning of play.
A late game rally in the fifth inning was the last roar of the lady Spartans, recording three hits and two runs – by that time the S-E ladies had already managed to outscore their opponents 4-3.
“Played well,” said Sherburne-Earlville head coach Michelle Parker.
Anna Rinaldo took the win on senior night, pitching three innings with no hits, one strikeout and one walk. Brooke Hailston pitched innings four through seven – allowing four hits and one walk, however striking out eight Unatego batters. Miranda Wright of S-E played the entire game as catcher.
Taking the loss for Unatego was Paige McCoy, who pitched 6.33 innings, before Megan Short finished off the game – pitching to Unatego’s catcher Deana Cerar.
Best in the loss at the plate for S-E was Savanna Niles 2-4, followed by Kiana Marshall 1-3, Alexis Kane 1-4, Miranda Wright 1-3, and Hope Beckwith 1-3.
Next up for Sherburne-Earlville (2-10 overall), they will play at home against Holland Patent at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, May 15.

Harpursville Softball defeats Greene 18-17 on Tuesday (MAC 5-8 semifinal)
HARPURSVILLE – Competing for the MAC league tournament 5-8 bracket championship, the lady Trojans of Greene fell victim to Harpursville 18-17 in an eight inning game on Tuesday.
Taking the loss on Tuesday, was Hanna Ludolph, who pitched the entire game to her catcher Tiffany Johns.
Greene would fail to find any momentum in the early innings, getting blanked for three innings and falling to a 10-0 deficit. That is when a six-run inning for the lady Trojans in the fourth, helped resurrect their chances.
In the loss, Greene saw doubles from MacKEnzie Lawrence and Alyssa Sands – with McKenna Sergi adding two. Greene would power their way back into the game, scoring 15 runs in the final four innings, prior to extra-innings. Sands, Sergi and Nicole Repp each added a triple a piece to the game.
Tied at 16-16 following the seventh inning of play – it was Harpursville who finished on top. Greene powered in one run to take the lead in the eighth inning, following that, the lady Hornets snuck two runs in for the come from behind win.

GREENE – Following the soul-sucking 18-17 loss – and a chance at the championship spot in the 5-8 MAC league tournament bracket – the lady Trojans returned the following day with a vengeance.
Greene crushed the lady Spartans of Unatego in a shootout at 20-12.
“We struggled defensively tonight, but kept hitting tonight to wipe out the defensive errors,” said Greene head coach Rick Smith.
Greene would secure a sectional playoff spot with the win, moving their overall record to 8-8. Taking the win on the day was Chrissy Boeltz who pitched all seven innings to Tiffany Johns.
Alyssa Sands finished 3-3 with a double and scored four runs for Greene, while McKenna Sergi hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning, while ending up with three hits and scoring three runs.
Impressively, down 12-11 in the bottom of the sixth inning – Greene smashed the scoreboard, scoring nine runs to take the 20-12 lead. No runs were scored in the seventh inning.

Greene Softball defeats Whitney Point 12-8 on Thursday
WHITNEY POINT – Picking up a non-league game – after having secured a sectional spot and a third-place finish in the MAC league tournament 5-8 bracket – the lady Trojans smashed Whitney Point for yet another win to close out the week.
Greene earned their ninth win of the season by defeating Whitney Point 12-8.
“Chrissy Boeltz pitched a complete game for the win,” said Greene head coach Rick Smith. “Claire Moxley cleared the bases, which were loaded to extend Greene’s lead.”
15-15, Greene and Whitney Point were tied with hits in the game, the difference was solid defensive play to get out of tough innings.
Taking the win for Greene was Chrissy Boeltz, pitching all seven innings to Tiffany Johns.
Earning doubles on the day, Boeltz added two, who Claire Moxley added one as well – Nicole Repp pitched in with a triple in the win.
Greene (9-8 overall), has picked up an extra game against Oxford on Wednesday, May 17, in preparation for their first playoff game of the 2017 season when they travel to Moravia on Thursday, May 18, at 4:30 p.m.

Deposit Softball defeats Bainbridge-Guilford 2-0 on Wednesday in MAC Championship
DEPOSIT – In the history of the school, Bainbridge-Guilford had never made an appearance in a MAC league tournament title game, until 2017.
Despite the 2-0 loss to the Deposit lady Lumberjacks, the lady Bobcats, not only are in the midst of the schools most winningest season, but B-G has now appeared in the MAC championship game for softball, volleyball, basketball, and soccer – all in this school year.
Playing the defending Section IV Class D and New York State Champions lady Jacks is no easy task. Deposit was responsible for B-G’s lone regular season loss, coming earlier in the season and resulting in Bainbridge-Guilford finishing with a 15-1 regular season record.
Make that two losses, two the lady Jacks, in a two-run game, the lady Bobcats could only find one hit in the championship game – resulting in the 2-0 loss.
The star, Makenzie Stiles, stole the show for her home team, as Stiles struck out 16 B-G batters in the process – allowing just one hit and one walk.
Deposit strung together hits in the bottom of the third inning to send two runners home for the decisive scores.
Taking the loss for Bainbridge-Guilford on the mound, was Kori Thornton. Thornton pitched six innings, while earning six strikeouts and just two walks. However, giving up six hits to the defending state champions, Thornton would allow a home run in the process.
Earning B-G’s lone hit in the loss was Megan Palmatier, who finished 1-2 at the plate.
Next up for Bainbridge-Guilford – 15-2 overall, and ranked 14th in New York State for Class C – they will await the Section IV coaches meeting to decide who and where they will play their first playoff game which is scheduled for Thursday, May 18.
Notably, Afton Softball was coming off a 6-3 loss to Deposit last Tuesday, played at Hancock on Thursday, May 11, losing by a score of 9-8 – effectively placing them in fourth-place for the MAC league tournament in the 1-4 bracket.
