McGraw throws one-hitter versus OV
OTSELIC – The saying is that pitching wins ballgames and on Monday, May 8, the Otselic Valley Viking baseball team understood that statement to the fullest as they lost to McGraw 10-2.
Sophomore Chase Curtis who started the game for the Eagles threw four and one third innings of no-hit ball before being relieved in the fifth inning due to the NYSPHSAA pitch count rule.
Despite walking seven batters on the afternoon, Curtis had kept his team’s no hit bid in tact as well as the victory by only giving up one run. Jaycob White kept the no-no inning alive pitching the remainder of the fifth inning before Brendan May allowed the only hit of the afternoon in his two innings of work.
The Viking’s Tanner Costa recorded the only hit of the day going 1-2 with the aforementioned single, two walks and one run scored. Costa wreaked havoc on the base paths as he stole three bases in the game. Jamie Andres-Lopez also scored one run for the Vikings in the game. Justin Graham took the loss for the Vikings as he allowed seven runs- five earned, on four walks and four hits over three innings pitched.

Poland’s offense too strong for OV
OTSELIC – After their loss to the Eagle’s from McGraw, the Vikings were back on the diamond looking to redeem themselves from their previous one-hit performance. Despite recording eight hits on the day, the Vikings dropped the game to Poland 6-4.
With the game tied headed into the top of the seventh inning, Joe Grimuldi pinch runs for Poland’s John Zuchowoski. Grimuldi advances to third on sac bunt by Connor Broadbent. Jordan LaSalle walked. Hunter Broadbent’s walk loaded the bases for Poland Tornadoes hitter Kaden Ozog.
Ozog’s fielder’s choice allowed Grimuldi to score the go ahead run to put Poland up 5-4. Tanner Allen’s one out single with the bases still loaded allowed LaSulle to score to pad the Tornado lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, OV had no response as the Vikings were retired in order. CJ Haitian despite his two innings pitched in relief, recorded the loss, giving up two earned runs- one earned, allowing one hit, three walks while striking out one.
Mitch Eichorst and Trent McCarthy each recorded two hits on the afternoon with Eichorst recording two RBIs and McCarthy driving in an RBI of his own.

Stockbridge scores early in win over Vikings
OTSELIC – Despite their best efforts to prevent their losing streak from continuing, the boys from Otselic Valley ran into the hard hitting Cougars from Stockbridge dropping a third straight game 14-5.
Despite the final scoreline, OV elected to stop the game briefly in the fifth inning to celebrate their three graduating seniors; Peter Kalin, Titus Reichard, and Mitch Eichorst.
Prior to the celebrations, the Cougars put up 11 of their 14 runs over the course of the first three innings. Small ball played a major role in the offensive efficiency for Stockbridge.
With the Cougars wrapping all of their 14 runs around Viking miscues, perfectly placed singles and picture perfect base running. Interestingly enough, with the absence of any extra-base hits from the Cougars, another major key to their victory with being patient at the plate as they walked six times. Add in the discrepancy in the hits column between the two clubs of 15-7, it was a frustrating game for the Vikings.
Committing four errors on the afternoon, the Vikings hung in the game tough, searching for answers to eliminate their defensive woes by pitching three separate athletes.
Trent McCarthy started the game, giving up 11 runs- six earned, eight hits, four walks, while striking out three over four innings. CJ Haitian had a two inning outing in which he gave up six hits, three runs- three earned, with two Ks and two walks. Peter Kalin’s outing of one inning was nearly flawless, allowing no runs on one hit and one strikeout.
Tanner Costa, Carter Rood and Mitch Eichorst all recorded two hits in the game. Rood scored one run, and Eichorst recorded one RBI on the afternoon. Jonah VanVoorhis led the team in RBIs with two on the day as he went 0 for 3 with a walk.
The Vikings return to the diamond on Wednesday, May 17, looking to end their losing streak when they travel to DeRuyter to take on the Rockets of DeRuyter with first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
