High scoring three innings leads to Canastota besting S-E baseball on senior night

SHERBURNE – The Marauders of Sherburne-Earlville were in full force in support of S-E’s varsity baseball team, as the S-E squad fell to Canastota 10-9 on senior night.
Playing at home, senior night, and playing in a one-run game heading into the fourth inning. What better way to play a baseball game on a sunny Chenango County day.
Prior to the game, Sherburne-Earlville honored their four graduating seniors: Trevor May, Joe Purdy, Wayne Law, and Blake Parry.
The S-E boys saw a slow start to the home game on Wednesday, May 17, as Canastota thumped the Marauders for three early runs in the first.
“Played a good game tonight overall. We made a couple early mistakes that hurt us. Again, I have to say that I’m proud of the effort these boys have shown this season,” said Sherburne-Earlville head coach Jay Tackabury.
Following the early mistakes that led to the 3-0 hole, S-E matched Canastota for five runs a piece in the second inning of the high scoring affair.
The Marauders were on the hunt. Down 8-5 entering just the third inning, S-E flipped the script on Canastota, to outscore the away team 4-2 – closing the gap to a 10-9 ball game.
That is where it stayed, unfortunately, for the S-E boys – as both teams gassed their bats in the first three innings – making for a four inning stretch of 0-0.
Best in the loss on senior night for Sherburne-Earlville was Mitch Doing who went 2-4 with two RBI, followed by Ben Osborne, 2-4 with two runs.
Senior Wayne Law, and senior Trevor May, as well as Brandon Howard – each added a hit a piece for the Marauders.
Taking the loss at home for S-E was Trevor May, pitching just 1.33 innings with one strikeout and three walks. Cody Beckwith was called in for relief, pitching 5.67 innings and having three strikeouts and no walks.
Canastota’s Coe earned the win on the mound, pitching five innings, striking out 11 S-E batters and walking just one.
Next up for Sherburne-Earlville baseball, they will host Mount Markham on Thursday, May 18, at 4:30 p.m. This last home game will mark the last game for S-E baseball in 2017.
