Chenango County high school baseball roundup, Section IV playoff preview

Greene Baseball defeats Unadilla Valley 9-1 last Wednesday (MAC 9-12, for 1st)
GREENE – Marking Unadilla Valley baseball’s last game for the 2017, they took a thumping from the Greene Trojans, last Wednesday.
“Zack (Orzell) pitched awesome, and our defense played amazing. Six innings of no-hit baseball, he had 101 pitches. Owen came in and gave up the one hit, but still pitched well,” said Greene head coach Ron Rapp.
Greene’s Orzell took the win, pitching six innings, with seven strikeouts and four walks.
Greene went to work at the plate – at a pace UV simply couldn’t keep up with. The Trojans smashes 13 hits in the game – to UV’s one.
“We hit the snot out of the ball,” said coach Rapp. “It could have easily been 15 or 16 hits, we hit two hits right back at the pitcher.”
Already up 4-0 heading into the sixth inning, things got interesting.
“Zach (Orzell) walked (Cameron) Osborne and (Jared) White to lead off the inning in the sixth,” said coach Rapp. “Bases are loaded with no outs, and they hit a dribble to short stop, they scored a run there. Then they flew out to the catcher and then Zach struck the kid out. They could’ve made a stand there, but Zach dug himself out.”
That dig out from Orzell sparked a scoring frenzy for the Trojans who smashed in two doubles and five singles in the bottom of the sixth inning – scoring five runs.
“We opened it up, we had two doubles, and five singles in the sixth,” said coach Rapp. “We unloaded. And then throw in an error from them.”
Taking the loss on the UV mound was Andrew Jackson – two innings, no strikeouts and two walks. Payton Stirone added four innings with two walks and two strikeouts. Unadilla Valley’s lone hit came from Brayden White, 1-1.
Greene saw Orzell finish 1-4 with an RBI, Alec Frair 2-4 with two runs and two RBI, Brandyn Scott 1-4 with one run and one RBI, Noah Kennedy 2-4 and two runs, Matt Bergholtz 2-4 with an RBI, Logan Kennedy 0-4 with one run and one RBI, Owen Howell 3-4 with two runs, Bradley Taft 1-1, and Logan Pixley 1-3 with a run.
With this loss, Greene officially clinched the first place spot in the MAC league tournament 9-12 bracket – keeping themselves alive in their playoff hunt. In conjunction with Greene’s win, Unadilla Valley played their last inning of baseball for 2017, finishing with an overall record of 0-12-1.
This marks two years in a row, that the Storm have not earned a win in varsity baseball.

Greene Baseball defeats Marathon 10-2 last Thursday
GREENE – Clinching a 2017 Section IV Class C playoff spot, Greene used the momentum from the win over UV to then topple Marathon at 10-2.
A 10-2 win over Marathon last Thursday, Greene once again is peaking at the right time – having solid pitching and superb batting – a recipe to surprise someone in sectionals.
“We are back on track for the playoffs, were going to try and get these young kids some experience with the big dogs,” said Greene head coach Ron Rapp. “We are going to go there and see what we can do, maybe we can catch somebody. We are getting hot at the right time.”
Alec Frair took the win for Greene on the mound – pitching all seven innings with eight strikeouts and just four hits allowed.
The Trojans racked up nine runs before Marathon could even think of scoring a run of their own – having 11 total Trojans hits.
Up 9-0 heading into the sixth inning, Greene added their final cushion run, moving the score to 10-0.
That is when some carefree play in the field cost the Trojans the shut out. Marathon would find home plate in the seventh inning – just twice – making the final 10-2.
“Offense makes you play different on defense, you always have a chance. We are getting some key hits,” said coach Rapp. “Two errors we had came in the seventh. We walked the lead-off batter then had an error on the shortstop, They got an RBI hit. It is what it is. We only struck out twice. We put the ball in play a lot. He (Caleb Ticknor of Marathon) didn’t walk any of us, he did a nice job.
Ticknor took the loss for Marathon, having pitched all seven innings.

Harpursville Baseball defeats Greene 10-4 last Friday
HARPURSVILLE – Having clinched their playoff spot, the Greene Trojans then fell victim to the Hornets on Friday, by a score of 10-4.
Greene would actually jump out with the 2-0 lead after the first inning, however, the Trojan offense went stale when faced with Harpursville’s pitcher. Harpursville’s Ryan Kachmar pitched all seven innings for a clean 100 pitches, 12 strikeouts and just two walks – surrendering five hits.
Five hits is well below the double-digit hits the Trojan bats had been producing late in the season.
Harpursville exploded in the third inning for a six-run swing to take the lead – something they wouldn’t look back from.
Already down 8-2 – Harpursville scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning – Greene tacked on two runs in the top of the fifth to attempt a comeback, however, would see their runs matches with two Hornet stings in the bottom of the fifth.
Greene’s pitchers – Kennedy and Scott – combined for just seven strikeouts and five walks, while allowing 12 hits.
Brandyn Scott finished best at the plate, going 2-4 with three RBI for Greene.
Greene (7-9), plays at Unatego on Friday, May 19 at 4:30 p.m. in the first round of the Section IV Class C playoffs.

A 1-1 ballgame after the first inning, the Crimson Knights failed to make any moves for three innings – allowing Marathon a chance to get settled. Marathon added a run in the third, before a massive explosion of five runs in the fourth.
Up 7-1, Afton showed their grit in battling back from the loss – matching Marathon for three runs in the fifth, before adding one in the sixth and three more in the seventh.
Both teams would find the ball 11 times in the even baseball game, however, one inning of bad baseball for Afton – five total errors in the game – proved to send Afton into a spiral heading into the playoffs.
This marked Marathon’s third win of the season, as they currently hold a 3-15 record and are the lone play-in game for the Class D playoffs, playing at Richfield Springs on May 18, at 4:30 p.m.
