S-E softball concludes 2017 season, sets sights on playoffs

Holland Patent Softball defeats Sherburne-Earlville 8-1 on Tuesday
SHERBURNE – The S-E softball team ripped off back-to-back-to-back games to close the 2017 season out – taking losses to Holland-Patent and Canastota, before adding a win on Thursday, against Mount Markham.
The S-E lady Marauders have been plagued by errors in the field – something that has cost them games in 2017, committing six in the 8-1 loss to the Golden Knights.
Scoring in the fourth inning – one run – helped escape the shutout for the lady Marauders, despite the bats being alive and having five hits in the game.
Solid defensive play – two errors only – allowed Holland-Patent to command S-E’s production.
Anna Rinaldo pitched three innings for S-E in the loss, having one strikeout, three walks and allowing two hits. Dalaney Parker pitched innings four to seven, allow four hits and five walks, grabbing just one strikeout. Miranda Wright played catcher all seven innings.
Skylar Kaelin finished 2-4, while Madison Brown finished 2-3 for S-E.

Canastota Softball defeats Sherburne-Earlville 12-3 on Wednesday
SHERBURNE – The S-E ladies embarked on their second of a three-game spurt, attempting to make some magic happen with a win at home over Canastota – that would not be the case, as Canastota overpowered the S-E lady Marauders for a 12-3 win.
Only up 1-0 over Sherburne-Earlville after the first inning, S-E was in no danger of another loss – as six innings still remained to be played. That is when a seven-run inning flopped the game sideways, as S-E was sent spinning to a 8-0 deficit.
The lady Marauders would add a run in the third and two in the sixth – however, wouldn’t come close to the comeback at home.
Rinaldo again took the loss for S-E – pitching the first and second inning – with two strikeouts, and allowing eight runs to the powerful Canastota batters.
Brooke Hailston came in for the third, fourth, and fifth innings of play, allowing five hits with her four strikeouts and two walks. Dalaney Parker finished out the game with two strikeouts and no walks, allowing two hits. Wright served as the catcher for the entire seven inning stretch.
The bats were there – nine hits – the errors were down to three, but the lady Marauders just couldn’t dig themselves out of the massive hole. Save the seven runs in the second innings, the score would have been 5-3 in favor of Canastota, a much more respectable loss.
Savannah Niles finished the game going 4-4 at the plate with two RBI, followed by Alexis Kane 2-3 with one RBI – McKenzie Holmes, Hope Beckwith, and Sara Genter added a hit a piece in the loss.

SHERBURNE – The final game of the season, at home in front of the S-E Marauder fans – the S-E lady Marauder softball team decided they had enough with losing game – ripping out a nice 12-6 win over Mount Markham.
The difference, a seven-run inning for themselves to change things up. Sherburne-Earlville softball matched Mount Markham to the tune of a 2-2 game heading into the second inning. Mount Markham added three runs in the top of the second for the lead – as S-E was only able to snag one.
Down 5-3 and with another Mount Markham run coming in the top of the third, S-E’s hopes were kept alive with their run-scoring spree in the bottom of the third.
Completely flipping the tune of the game, the lady Marauders clawed their way to a 10-6 leading heading into the fourth inning. With momentum on their side, S-E shut down all offensive production from Mount Markham – blanking them for the final four inning stretch – while adding two additional runs in their cushioned win to cap off the regular season.
Rinaldo was credited wit the win on the mound, with Delaney Parker coming in for relief once again. Pitching to Wright for seven innings.
Alexis Kane proved to be the top batter for S-E – who had four hits – Kane finished 2-3 and a run.

Julia Kocienda came in to pitch the fourth and two thirds of the fifth inning, with no strikeouts, three walks, and allowing two runs. Mount Markham’s Amber Bryce served as the catcher whole game.
With the win to close out the regular season, Sherburne-Earlville softball finishes with an overall record of 3-12.
“We have had a lot of growth this season, and I wish this was the beginning and not the end,” said Sherburne-Earlville head coach Michelle Parker. “This senior group has been a real pleasure to coach and I will miss their hustle, desire, and passion to play.”
S-E softball will be advancing to sectional play, due to Section III playoffs being an open to any teams this season.
“We are going for experience,” said coach Parker.
