NORWICH – Upwards of 125 American Legion Riders took to the roads for a fundraising event on Saturday, May 20, as part of an effort to raise money to benefit injured military personnel at Landstahl U.S. Military Hospital in Germany.
American Legion Riders Vice President Jim Cushman says that $4,500 was raised during the 12th annual benefit ride – which takes place every year on Armed Forces Day – to go towards purchasing essential items, like toiletries, for injured military personnel upon their arrival at Landstahl U.S. Military Hospital in Germany, often after they are airlifted directly from combat-zones in the Middle East.
The riders congregated at American Legion Post 189 in Norwich on Saturday morning, where they were joined by Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, who addressed the riders' cause and spoke of the importance of the Landstahl U.S. Military Hospital Care Project.
City of Norwich Mayor Christine Carnrike was also in attendance and spoke at the event, echoing Tenney's sentiment.
Following Norwich student-Lily Supenski's rendition of the National Anthem, riders were ready to embark on their 85-mile journey.
Their first stop was at the New York State Veterans' Home in Oxford, where they commended its veterans for their service.
Afterwards, riders stopped for lunch at Lippy's Bar & Grill in Greene before venturing over to Autumn Meadows LLC in McDonough where they featured a number of raffles and Chinese Auction items to further raise funds.
85-miles later, the riders returned to Norwich with their mission accomplished.
Cushman says that $4,500 is somewhat customary in terms of how much the riders are able to raise annually for the Landstahl U.S. Military Hospital Care Project, but they are gladly accepting additional donations to further aid injured military personnel.
To donate to the care project, visit American Legion Post 189 at 29 Sheldon Street in Norwich, or call (607) 334-9414 and mention the American Legion Riders and the Landstahl U.S. Military Hospital Care Project.
