WINDSOR- Over the course of an unplanned, but nonetheless a two-day May 18-19 Southern Tier Athletic Conference Championship meet thanks to Mother Nature and a torrential downpour. The Norwich High School men’s and women’s track team didn’t let the rain impact their performances as the men’s team placed third in STAC amassing 57 points, meanwhile the ladies placed seventh as a team in STAC scoring 30 points.

For the boys team, Ben Ericksen started things off for the Purple Tornado placing fifth in the Steeplechase with a time of 10:48.07- just barely missing a chance to break his school record by two seconds. However, to replace the missed opportunity of breaking a school record, the 4x100 meter relay team of David Berger, Eric Conant, Ky’sawn Veale and Zack Race broke the school record in the event with a time of 44.02 seconds for a second place finish. In the 100 and 200 meter races, Zack Race re-broke his already established school records, winning the 100m dash with a time of 10.93 seconds and in the 200 meter dash, Race ran a time of 22.19 seconds on his way to another victory. Notably, Eric Conant placed sixth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.54 seconds.

In the 110m hurdles, Ky’sawn Veale placed second in the event with a new personal record time of 16.48 seconds. Connor Nial placed fourth in the 400m hurdles running a quick time of 1:01.37- with the difference of .04 separating Nial from a third place finish. Despite not making the podium, Noah Bufalini put out a PR in the 1600m with a time of 4:50.56 minutes. Speaking of PR’s the ever improving sophomore Gabe Gawronski displayed his brilliance on the track with a fourth place finish in the 800 meters timing 1:58.29 minutes, given the competitive nature of the race the finishing spots of second to fourth place were all within .29 seconds of one another. Gawronski added another brilliant performance on the day as he was joined by teammates Scott Tomanocy, Connor Nial and Zack Race in the 4x400m relay- winning the STAC title in the event with a time of 3:30.76 seconds. Robert Shepard exhibited a personal record throw of 42’04.50” in the shotput, placing ninth and teammate Zach Lowe threw the shot for a personal record in the event for a distance of 40’ 03.50” placing 15th.

On the girls side, the 4x100m relay team of Emily Shattuck, Caroline Stewart, Hailey Colabelli and Delilah Geislinger ran a season’s best time of 51.96 seconds in the semi-finals. However due to the rainout and scheduling conflicts, the 4x100m team that ran in finals on May 19 was substituted by Katie Gawronski, Meghan Komendarek, Riley Marsh and Nicole Jeffrey who placed seventh in a time of 54.58 seconds. Nicole Jeffrey recorded a new personal record in the 1500m race with a time of 5:03.52 minutes on her way to a fourth place finish in the event. Jeffrey also added another watermark to her individual events with a fifth place finish in the 800meter run, setting a personal record of 2:26.76. Hailey Colabelli placed seventh in the 400 meter run with a time of 1:03.21 seconds. Freshman Katie Gawronski joined the extensive list of Norwich harriers who gained a personal record on the afternoon with a second place in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:10.84. Notably, Gawronski’s performance was only .22 seconds away from a STAC title in the event as Audrey Brown of Union- Endicott pulled off a 1:10.62 performance. Norwich’s 4x400m relay squad of Gawronski, Komendarek, Jeffrey and Marsh ran a time of 4:37.24 for a ninth place finish. Another PR on the day was Hannah Klockowski’s performance in the 100m hurdles with a time of 17.84 seconds.

Kara Evans placed 11th in the shotput for Norwich, throwing for a distance of 29’10”, Evans also placed fifth in the discus with a toss of 102’07.” In the long jump the duo of Caroline Stewart and Emily Shattuck placed second and third with Stewart jumping for a distance of 17’00.50” and with Shattuck nipping at her teammate’s heels with a leap of 17’00.” Rounding out the action for the girl’s team was Liz Eddy in the Pole Vault, tying for a sixth place finish with a vault clearing 7’00.”

The Norwich High School track team is back in action on Thursday May 25 as the Purple Tornado make the trek down route 12 to Johnson City High School as the men’s and women’s teams compete for a Class B Championship with the first event slated to start at 4 p.m.
