NORWICH – Commander William Haines has announced the upcoming Memorial Day events for Monday, May 29, in an effort to honor all veterans of war, POWs, victims of 9/11, and those affected by the present-day War on Terrorism in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.

The Memorial Day observance will include a parade, guest speaker John Sheldon, traditional veteran ceremonies and firearms salute, followed by Taps performed by trumpeters from the Norwich High School Marching Band.

Beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, parade participants will congregate at the VFW in Norwich.

At 11 a.m., the parade will commence and proceed west on East and West Main Streets, to the City's West Side Park where veteran services will be conducted in front of the World War II Monument.

Parade participants will include the Norwich City Police and Fire Departments, Chenango County Sheriff's Department, the NHS Marching Band, American Legion Post 189, American Legion Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion, American Legion Riders, VFW Post 2782, VFS Auxiliary, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Brownies, Patriot Guard Riders, and disabled and senior veterans.

Disables and senior veterans will ride in vehicles provided by the Northeast Classic Car Museum.

The National Anthem will be sung by the NHS Madrigal Chorus, and the “echo” Taps will be played by trumpeters of the NHS Marching Band.

Following the parade, guest speaker and retired Command Sergeant Major from the U.S. Army, John Sheldon, will address attendees. Sheldon is Manager of the Curtis Lumber Company's store in Norwich, and proud father to his son Gunnar, who is currently a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army's Military Police. Sheldon's former career field in the U.S. Army was artillery.

Following the conclusion of the Memorial Day ceremonies, the Honor Guards from the American Legion and VFW Posts will conduct military services at the Mount Hope and St. Paul's cemeteries for fallen veterans.

A floating wreath will be placed in the Canasawacta Creek in memory of those lost at sea.

After the memorial services, the American Legion will provide a light lunch and refreshments at its headquarters at 29 Sheldon Street in Norwich. At the Post, Legion members will conduct the dignified and respectful disposal of unserviceable American and NYS flags.
