SHERBURNE – Since 1949, the Sherburne Pageant of Bands has been recognized as one of the longest running, largest, and most highly regarded pageants in the state.

Today in its 68th year, 32 junior and senior high school bands competed in Jazz Ensemble, Small Ensemble, and Concert Band, as well as Best of Class, Drum Major, Floats, Norman Palmiter Jr., Percussion, Frank L. Miller Outstanding Director and the Albert Whitney Overall Achievement Award.

Amongst the various junior and senior high school bands that participated in the pageant, only a few local schools took first place:

Gilbertville Mt. Upton took first in the Jazz Ensemble class C with 91.0 points; Milford took first place in the Small Ensemble class C with 94.5 points; Gilbertville Mt. Upton took first in the Concert Band, class C with 92.0 points; Morris took first place in the Color Guard, class C with 93.0 points; Oxford Academy took first in the Color Guard, class B with 89.0 points; Norwich took first in the Parade, class AA with 84.0 points; Norwich took first place in the Drum Line, class AA with 86.0 points; Norwich also took first place in the Drum Major Awards, Sherburne Pee Wee Wrestlers took first place in the float category; and Oxford Academy was awarded the Norman Palmiter Jr. percussion award.

Another annual tradition that takes place at the Sherburne Pageant of Bands is a “Person of the Day.”

This year, Leslie Hodge – a lifelong Sherburne resident who joined the Sherburne Fire Department in September of 1968 – has served as either the delegant or an alternate to the Fireman’s Association of The State of New York from 1973 until 1980 when he was awarded an honorary member of the Fire Department. Hodge was a fellow member of the Sherburne Saints Hose Racing Team and also served on various Pageant of Bands committees, and even ended up as one of the renowned “Chicken Pluckers.”

In 2010, Hodge received the Sherburne Fire Department Lifetime Achievement Award and worked various jobs since then with the Sherburne-Earlville Central School District until his retirement.

The Sherburne Fire Department and the Sherburne-Earlville Central School would like to give special thank you to Jim Taylor’s Law Firm, Sherburne Fire Auxiliary, Chenango Valley Technologies, and Chobani for their support of the 68th Pageant of Bands.
