COOPERSTOWN – On Tuesday June 13, the Chenango Hellcats Legion baseball team traveled to the birthplace of baseball to play Cooperstown’s Legion squad.
The home team put runs on the board in a hurry, Cooperstown, having went scoreless after the first inning, exploded for five runs in the bottom half of the second. The Hellcats, desperate to keep the game close in the early frame tacked on four more to cut the Cooperstown lead to one.
The Hellcats managed to tie the game in the fourth inning, before claiming the lead for good in the top of the sixth inning. But wait, there’s more. As the Hellcats clung to a 7-6 lead entering the top of the final inning, the baseball boys from Chenango doubled their score, scoring seven runs in the final inning all while blanking their opponent in the bottom half of the seventh to claim the 14-6 victory.
The Hellcat’s Jon Heggie was 4 for 5 on the afternoon with two stolen bases, two RBIs, and two runs scored, Dylan Depew, Conor Graven-Briggs, Vince Caiati, and KJ Ives all recorded more than one hit in the game, with Ives going 3 for 5. Ives, Depew, Tommy Voce and Tyler King each recorded to RBIs on the game, with Depew, Ives, and, Caiati, scoring two runs a piece, King meanwhile scored three runs in the game.
Austing Crawford started for the Hellcats pitching three innings, while allowing five runs while striking out three. Depew, pitched two shutout innings of relief, only allowing one hit while striking out three. Heggie would claim the win, pitching one inning of work allowing two hits, one run and one walk. Voce punched out the final outs for the Hellcats, striking out the side to end the game.
“Tonight was a great team win,” said head coach Ben Barnes, “We started off slow making errors and then came back from a five run deficit. Big play in the bottom of the sixth when Paden Burlison threw out the tying run from center field… We need to try and not play from behind as much. We need to get an early lead and keep it throughout the whole game”
The Hellcats continue their summer baseball season when they play Hillcrest today, Thursday June 15 with first pitch at 6 p.m.
Stay tuned in a future edition of The Evening Sun for the report on last nights loss to Johnson City at 11-0 and the outcome of the Hillcrest game.
