Norwich juniors awarded scholarships

NORWICH – Select Norwich High School juniors were awarded scholarships on Wednesday, June 14 based on the students' applicability to the various scholarships' pre-existing criteria. The recipients are listed as follows:

• LeMoyne College Heights Scholarship – $12,500 per year ($50,000 total) – Awarded to a student who ranks in the top 10 percent of their class, has a GPA of 90 percent or higher, scored a minimum of 50 on each section of the PSAT, and made significant contributions in leadership and service to school and community. 2017 recipient: Kalie Binelli.

• St. Lawrence University Book Award – $1,000 per year ($4,000 total) – Awarded to a student who exhibits significant contributions and commitment to community service. 2017 recipient: Emily Layman.

• Elmira Scholarship – $20,000 per year ($80,000 total) – Awarded to one male and one female who ranks in the top 10 percent of their class, maintains a GPA of 90 percent or higher, and exhibits outstanding school and community leadership. 2017 recipients: LeahAnne Humphrey and Josiah Shaver.

• Rensselaer Medal Scholarship – $25,000 per year ($100,000 total) – Awarded to a student who ranks in to top 10 percent of their class, excels in advanced math and science courses (must have completed chemistry, physics, math 12), and exhibits significant involvement in extracurricular activities. 2017 recipient: Wesley Mills.

• RIT Innovation & Creativity Scholarship – $7,000 per year ($28,000 total) – Awarded to one male and one female who rank in the top 10 percent of their class, are leaders in their school and community, and exhibit outstanding achievement in innovation, creativity, or entrepreneurship. 2017 recipients: Ben Barber and Stephanie Carpenter.

• RIT Computing Medal Scholarship – $7,000 per year ($28,000 total) – Awarded to one male and one female who rank in the top 10 percent of their class, are leaders in their school and community, and demonstrate an interest and ability in computing. 2017 recipients: Graham Rudy and Adriana Fratini.

• Clarkson Leadership Scholarship – $15,000 per year ($60,000 total) – Awarded to a student demonstrating outstanding leadership qualities, has an academic interest in engineering, business, science, or liberal arts, is recognized as a positive contributor to school and community, and ranks in the top 15 percent of their class. 2017 recipient: Wesley Mills.

• Clarkson Achievement Scholarship – $12,000 per year ($48,000 total) – Awarded to a student who demonstrates outstanding leadership qualities, has an academic interest in engineering, business, science, or liberal arts, is recognized as a positive contributor to school and community, and ranks in the top 15 percent of their class. 2017 recipient: Michael Hayes.

• U of Rochester George Eastman Scholarship – $7,500 per year ($30,000 total) – Awarded to a student who maintains high grades in challenging courses, is extensively involved in extracurricular activities, and exhibits strong leadership at school and in the community. 2017 recipient: Maddie Hafele.

• U of Rochester Susan B. Anthony Scholarship – $7,500 per year ($30,000 total) – Awarded to a student who demonstrates commitment to understanding and addressing difficult social issues, exhibits leadership and a dedication to community action, maintains strong grades through rigorous courses taken in the humanities and social sciences. 2017 recipient: Ellie O'Neill.

• U of Rochester Bausch & Lomb Scholarship – $7,500 per year ($30,000 total) – Awarded to a student who has high levels of achievement and rigor in science classes and has high PSAT math and/or SAT math scores. 2017 recipient: Zayn Harper.

• U of Rochester Xerox Scholarship – $7,500 per year ($30,000 total) – Awarded to a student with strong interest in innovation and/or information technology and a high level of achievement in this area, who has been exposed to new technologies outside of school and has been known to lead other students with innovative solutions to old problems. 2017 recipient: Scott Tomanocy.

• Wells College Scholarship – $10,000 per year ($40,000 total) – Awarded to two students who exhibit commitment to academics and strong student leadership. 2017 recipients: Brandon Shimer and Destiny Smith.

• Sage College Scholarship – $10,000 per year ($40,000 total) – Awarded to a student who ranks in the top 25 percent of their class, maintains a B+ average in core academics, has a desire to lead the school/community, and is active in community service and extracurricular activities. 2017 recipient: Holly Sullivan.
